How guaranteed is your bonus?

My fund just fired someone (for poor performance) at their year end review, which is when we find out our bonuses. They still got paid out in full... I’m curious how common this is. Do you guys ever get a bonus below target, or do you view it as nearly guaranteed (except for extreme negative outliers)

I've never heard of someone getting let go but getting his/her bonus ever.. seems too good to be true lol. Literally every other bank/PE/HF etc would likely just let said poor performer go and not pay out a dime of the bonus. Did the person who got fired have a good relationship with everyone but was a "not working out" scenario? Only thing I can think of which would warrant that but even that's a stretch by a lot
