How important is work experience for MBA?
I’ve performed pretty poorly academically the past few semesters and I will likely end with a 3.4-3.6 GPA from my non-target undergrad. I’m going FT to a BB in NY. Assuming I can get into a MM PE shop, how do my business school prospects look? I’m not looking for H/S/W but would want M7 if possible.
Average GPA is like a 3.6 across M7. In terms of admissions weight, roughly:
You'll be fine. Focus on enjoying the time before you start work and putting your best foot forward when you hit the desk. In 5 years who knows if you'll even want an MBA.
There is a difference between a 3.4 and a 3.6. The former is below average and the latter is not. Trend also counts. I'm assuming you're a senior and if your grades dropped recently that's worse then if the weak grades were early in your college career.
However, work experience definitely counts. So does context. What caused your grades to dip? (You don't need to say that here) Schools will be more understanding if the causes for your dip in grades no longer affect your performance. Progression and increasing responsibility at work will show that to the schools.
A high test score will also help.
You may want you to listen to 5 As for Your Low GPA. Yes I know your grades aren't really low, but the advice still holds if you are dealing with a dip. Also check out Prep for B-School: A 4-Year Guide for College Students and Recent Grads
