How much does size of coverage universe and size of team matter?
I'll be an SA at a BB this coming summer and have to pref different industry teams to determine where I'll be placed.
One industry that I really want to cover only has a 2 person team, and covers between 22 and 25 stocks. Is that a warning sign? Or does it just mean that some industries simply require smaller teams? I really am interested in this industry but am hesitant to join a 2 person team instead of, say, a 5 person team.
What is the sector?
Gaming & Leisure
As an intern on a team with 5 people I can't imagine you will do anything of value. 5 people (which I assume means Senior + 4 associates) is too many to begin with in a 22-25 company coverage universe, in my opinion. You might actually learn something on the two person team.
Cool. I was more just nervous small team relative to other industries meant people had jumped ship, but perhaps that's not the case.
I'd base my preference on my sector interest and relationship with people on the team, not size of the team.
This past summer I actually interned in a team that started out as just the senior analyst and the associate, but by the end of the summer two more full time associates were hired. Can confirm that the amount you learn/contribute drastically decreases as the team grows in size.
