unpaid internships are worthless.
I don’t think you would be an asshole at all. They would have picked a more qualified candidate over you (research firm) if they had one. They don’t care about you personally.
You don’t owe them anything.

Loyalty to any firm is overrated, especially if they aren't paying you. Just respectfully tell them the situation and you'll be fine, they should understand why you'd want to leave and go to an IB and be paid. Remember that if your current firm thought you were truly valuable, they'd be paying you for it. Congrats on the new offer.
Btw, to my point above...the research firm is valuing your labor at $0, the bank is valuing your labor at greater than zero. Who would you rather sell your labor to?
not an asshole...but also....don't tell them why you are leaving...also don't put it on your social media or linkedin....you don't want to burn bridges...just tell them that you can't continue the summer internship, and thank them for the opportunity.
they are not paying you, so you can do this with a phone call or an email...you don't even need to show up to quit a "job" that is not paying you.
