A typical workday consists of something like
Fat - 60.25g Carbs - 135.16g Fiber - 20.28g Protein - 120.9g
Solely from food, doesn't include snacks or post-lift powder. And yes im crazy and track everything I eat Monday - lunch on Friday
What is your physique goal? I prefer to skew up the fats and down the carbs. I'm around 8%-10% BF in the summer and about 12%-14% the rest of the year.
Don't really have any, I started tracking to lose a weight and never stopped... Now, that is just how I eat and from time to time also like to pick things up and put them down... Those numbers change with how often I get to the gym and my physical activity outside of the gym but those are the averages for the last 3 months.
I'm a competitive bodybuilder. I take around 1.5 grams per pound of my body weight. Each meal has 6-8 oz chicken or beef or 2 talipia, cup of rice and cup of broccoli/spinach/green beans.
>=1 g/lb daily regardless of bulk/cut
I like to eat candy.

I do endurance training, decent article.

more than you
How much protein? All of them
I try to get 170g/day, which is tough on this 2000 cal diet. Can't wait to start bulking again.
So you basically max out with 30 grams every 3 hours, why on god's earth are you only consuming 2000 calories with that level of protein intake?
on a cut brah
cum joke... ummmm idk fuck it
These days: ~50-75g daily
Used to be higher few weeks ago when I'd also have 1-3 protein shakes on workout days.
Excess protein becomes fat. You don't need more than .90 per pound.
Protein only really can be turned into triglycerides if it's first converted in the body into glucose and then converted via de novo lipogenesis. In other words it's pretty much impossible for protein to be converted to fat in the body.
Also you don't even mention total caloric intake which obviously has a very large influence on fat gain/loss.
My weekly diet consists of
-2 steaks, medium rare -3-5 hamburgers -bacon and eggs for breakfast -2 or 3 racks of PBR -Whatever healthy shit I have to eat with the Mrs. when we dine together
so however much protein that comes out to....
amazing.
I target 1-1.25g per kg of weight daily, mostly from white meat, greek yogurt, cheese, etc. I tried doing the high protein thing one summer and stuck with it for 3-6 months (can't remember) and I got bulkier, yes, but I didn't really start feeling good until I started doing Christian Bale's diet method. it's called 321, meaning every meal should have 3 parts carbs, 2 parts protein, and 1 part fat (unsaturated, not like butter or donuts). perhaps it's because I don't do powerlifting anymore (all circuit training or swimming), but minimizing carbs really messed me up.
@"thebrofessor", I remember reading something about that on bb.com, but it sounded more like speculation to me. He was a vegetarian for a while so I doubt he ate that much protein. If you can give me a link to him actually saying that, I will give you will get a Silver Banana.
Ditch the buns. That shit makes you fat. Here's what I do:
mix: 50% ground beef 50% ground pork (you can use turkey too or whatever) roasted tobasco sauce crushed black pepper you can use sea salt. I don't. We eat too much salt as is.
little bit of grape seed oil. just a bit because the meat is fatty already. you can use some sesame oil, but its healthiness for Europeans is debatable. olive oil is ok but has a low smoke point, so I save it for salads
Grill that shit up. I grill once a week and just tupperware dem hos. When you're ready to eat it, cut a slice of sharp cheese on the top and microwave it. You can warm it in the oven, which is debatably (probably) healthier, but I don't really care that much.
So the cheese melts on top of that shit (use good cheese, not that gay shit in a plastic bag. get cheese with 0 carbs if you wanna keep it kosher. don't drown that shit either). throw a dash of sesame seeds on top so they sink into that cheese like a bra strap in a fat bitch's folds
Eat that shit with a salad with the veggies and the olive oil and the crushed black pepper and a bit of sesame seeds and the vinegar (I use apple cider or coconut)
Bam son tell me you won't be satisfied, full, and smexy
That actually sounds pretty damn good.
In all seriousness to the people in this thread, doesn't it get really time consuming and seem tedious to count calories/carbs/proteins/fats/daily shits/etc ?
It does, I used myfitnesspal for maybe 3 weeks when I changed my diet and it took about as much time as position maintenance on another company. It's good if you're changing something with how you eat but I think the utility is marginal if you're doing the right stuff to begin with
Not really. Takes me a minute or two before each meal to record everything in Myfitnesspal, but most days I do it the day before because I'm already prepping my lunches. It's just tough to get used to but it isn't time consuming at all.
Protein shakes are for the most part a ruse and wishful thinking. They have high protein to volume ratio however many of them are also very high in carbs. Carbs will be consumed far quicker than the protein will, this will likely cause much of the protein to be expelled unless the user is very very active. Its much easier to just say I don't have a six pack because I have enough money to drink all day.
My beef with protein shakes is that a lot of them have tons of heavy metals and are downright unnecessary. You see all these 175 lb dudes who aren't even that lean and have a gym bag full of nonsense.
You use Tinder and your afraid of metals in your protein? Are you Patrick Bateman?
0.5-0.7 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Average healthy adult (male or female) that IS doing some form of exercise regularly or IS trying to improve their body (lose fat, build muscle, etc.). This is the minimum I'd recommend in this case. 0.8-1 grams of protein per pound of body weight.
Best way to get protein? (Originally Posted: 07/30/2012)
There's probably a fitness forum somewhere which is more suitable for this question, but I figure there are a bunch of gym rats who know about nutrition on this board, so here goes:
What single food has the most protein per gram of carb+fat? Essentially, I'm trying to find what's, in one way, the healthiest protein source.
If it's something that has other issues, please list (e.g. long-term side effects, or plain inconvenience)
Tuna and chicken are both way up there, salmon as well. Funnily enough, caterpillars are even better but I think you might get some weird looks eating caterpillars. In general, any fish and chicken will be fantastic for you as long as they aren't processed crap. Fish is also great for the brain. Warning though, if eating fish regularly at the office I recommend you keep a supply of mints around!
That depends on how convenient you want it to be. If it's on the go, shakes are best, most likely a blend of whey and casein. If you actually have time, then red meat such as steak for sure. Most protein found in red meat compared to any other meat. Another convenience option might be canned tuna, but I'm not sure if you want your breath to smell like tuna in office.
White eggs, chicken breasts, fish.
If you're looking for an easy, cheap and fast way to get some protein I would go for whey or casein shakes.
This. But personally I still love whole eggs; the whole cholesterol thing isn't much of an issue if you're generally okay on your diet and you're missing out on some pretty good nutrients if you skip out on it too.
All lean meats have 20-26gm protein per 100 gms with almost no fat/carbs
Tuna, Boneless/skinless chicken/turkey, Chicken whites, Ground beef with fat drained,. IMO tuna is the easiest source but don't cross 3-4 cans a day due to mercury content.
If you're short on time and want to hit that 1gm/1lb protein target, can't go wrong with protein powders
Purest form of protein you can find is egg whites, plain and simple.
In terms of meats, chicken and salmon are as lean as you can get, whereas beef offers higher protein content but with more calories and fats.
Peanut butter, milk and dairy products in general offer small amounts of protein per serving, and fruits have little to no protein per serving.
Protein shakes are an excellent source of proteins but it's useless to drink more than 2 servings per day (about 40 grams), as your body generally can't metabolize more than that from a single source of protein. Vary your sources to get the best protein uptake.
Define "pure". Also, where did you get the claimed "body can't metabolize" information from? Defend your position, don't sling MS.
Pea protein has 0g carb and 0g fat for 26g protein per scoop ;)
beans + milk
If you want to smell bad.
I eat tuna,chicken or turkey
Natural jerky, chicken breast, tuna.
But since this isn't bb.com and we have day jobs... steak and sushi.
Mealworms... All day Err day
Chicken, fish, and all that other good stuff is fine. However, if you don't have time to grill chicken every night consider getting your protein from multiple sources.
Quick breakfast? Forget Apple Jacks, eat Kashi GoLean (13g protein/serving)
Munchies? Forget chips from the vending machine, eat Fage Greek Yogurt (18g/serving)
Don't have to eat chicken/steak 7 days a week, just be smart about it. Don't forget the protein powder...
Greek yogurt (22g protein, 8g carb) - Great if you lack the inclination/time to cook eggs in the morning.
Jack Links Jerky isn't bad either (15g protein, 3g carb, 1g fat)
yea but whats the sodium content there?
Finally someone mentions greek yogurt. It's perfect if you're on the go or are looking for something small/quick to eat. Just try to avoid the flavored ones as they usually contain x2 or x3 amount of sugar than regular low-fat flavors.
Also- all beans are incredible for you. Some are better than others and I suggest switching it up between types as it's really easy to get sick of them if you just eat the same type every day.
Unless you have some serious cholesterol issue, whole eggs are better overall than whites from a nutritional aspect. Half the protein and a majority of the nutrients are in the yolk.
Otherwise I'm confused on what your goal is here. If you just want protein get some whey protein powder, or casein if you want something slower-reacting. That's almost 100% protein per gram, just don't buy it from some fitness store that's trying to rip you off and make sure to read the nutrition label first.
i was sure this was going to be a gag thread.
or should i say gag reflex.
Just go with shakes. Faster, easier and you can take it with you.
Steak + Shakes. Eggs are good too.
Be thankful you can eat eggs and nuts, some of us can't.
whey shakes, greek yogurt, fish, chicken, egg whites, and nuts (think walnuts and almonds)
anything with whey, almonds, surprisingly quinoa and egg whites.
Ya... much as everyone said...
I do a mostly protein diet.. Its called the Paleo diet. check it out its actually pretty sweet I am a fan..
Breakfast = Egg Whites(little to no carbs.. ALLL protien) Meat = Chicken, turkey, and fish(White fish) Also green is good when it comes to veggies so lettuce, spinach, etc.
the quickest and easiest is just protein powder. There are 1,000s of kinds. I can't remember the name of the ones I have. I actually mix 2 different ones, mostly because one tastes pretty good and the other is aweful. They are low/zero carb and low calorie powders so it is essentially just protein
No such thing as a Paleo diet. It's been debunked as fad and junk science:
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-paleo-diet-half-baked-how…
Now before you sling monkey shit, read the rest of my post. You are in fact following the correct athlete diet for training to increase lean muscle mass and reduce fat and you probably are in a state of ketosis since no carbs. Well done. Your eating is correct. But don't use the term Paleo. It's bogus. Remain vigilant my friend.
just get mom to make some meatloaf, you can share it with your guests
I circulate chicken breast, ground sirloin(90 or 95%), and tuna steaks for my main protein sources. If you cut out too many carbs and fats you won't be getting a complete diet.
Muscle milk
...
Good high protein but high calorie source is dairy, lots of milk, cottage cheese, regular cheese, etc.
Muscle milk is the best artifical protein, but the best meat protein is roast beef or even chicken
Cheapest reasonable way is Cabot 75% reduced fat cheese. 8 oz brick is ~$2.50.
24 oz porterhouse from smith and wollensky once a week since I'm pals with our FICC sales desk.
There are plenty of protein rich food sources out there. but if you want the best protein to calorie ratio go with some protein shake 2-3 scoops a day is fine. So are protein bars.
I make sure that I am alternating between food and supplement sources between each meal. Chicken breastss are great. Egg whites are ok but you have to eat way too much before you hit 30g of protein from that source alone.. BEEF jerky is amazing so are kashi cereal the one with 12 g of protein per serving.
eat a combination of protein and carbs even if you are snacking to help you stay full. ie beef jerky and a banana or milk and 1.5 scoop of protein.
good luck
Google "Harzer Roller" and look at the pictures. That's one solid piece of brotein.
No idea if it is the healthiest but whey protein is probably the most convenient and delivers the best protein to carbs/fat ratio. The latter is depending in the choice of the brand of course.
No point. Only face matters.
Protein shakes are best for when you don't have time to sit down and eat. I also like to snack on almonds in class and at work.
Greek Yogurt + Almonds or Walnuts + Fruit is great for breakfast. Something like 30 grams of protein or so and keeps you full through the morning
not too knowledgeable about nutrition, but I found that 0.5% cottage cheese has a pretty good fat/carb/calorie to protein ratio
This is a dumb question. There is no optimal ratio. You can get 100% protein from a variety of sources in a variety of forms if you want. Ideally, you'd consume a variety of protein sources to get as much variety in amino acid intake as possible, preferably from whole foods. Fats are also really important. So are veggies.
poor college student here. i usually get 10lbs of chicken from costco and cook about 2lbs a week for dinner, freeze the rest. i also mix whey, peanut butter and oats and eat that for breakfast.

What protein shakes do WSO monkeys use/recommend And also do you guys think that things like cross fit and p90x (taking it seriously) is worth it?
I know there is a lot of websites about this but half of those people contradict themselves so I like fresh answers.
Love you guys!
I use Optimum Nutrition's basic whey powder in Cookies & Cream (so tasty). Generally two scoops post-workout.
Cross fit seems to work well for people, but in the end it's move more, lift heavier, and eat better to get results.
http://www.amazon.com/Premier-Protein-Shakes-18-11oz-shakes/dp/B001O213…
If you get this, don't get it off amazon. Get it from Costco. It's sooooo much cheaper from Costco. Also, get the chocolate one...any other flavor tastes like $hit.
No, ignore the chick. Syntha 6 is the shit, specifically nanner flavored (coincidental but serious nonetheless)
p90x works if you do it properly and follow the diet exactly.
Went to GNC... And looking back I think more and more on it... Must have been stupid of me to ask the guy that worked there what to get. I mean he seemed more genuinely interested because he saw my sister and my teacup Pomeranian. ANYWAYS. I asked about Myofusion and he said to get something that has the word "mass" because I am like a twig. SO he showed me two different things. Something crappy and something that was GNC brand but was like 70 bucks. It requires me to drink so much to get just 60 grams of protein... So what I am asking here right now is, is GNC Beyond Raw re-built mass any good or should i chunk that and get something else.
So much to get 60g? The Myoplex ready made shakes (a more expensive way to go than the mix) have 42 grams and they're only 17 ounces.
I'd been using Optimum Whey for 4 years prior to switching to Gaspari's MyoFusion... Strawberry & Cream w/ 2% organic milk is fucking amazing. I thought all proteins tasted like crap until I tried MyoFusion.
Also don't ever consumer more than 50g of protein/shake. Human body can digest only 40-50g of proteins/meal (unless you are a 250+lbs bodybuilder/weightlifter).
CrossFit is amazing.... if you are a woman...
I like Isopure
Here is a better spot to find some good answers for this one:
http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f15/
MHP Up Your Mass from GNC. I've always just relied on diet, but this stuff packed on 15 pounds of muscle in 2 months. GOOD STUFF, really advanced and good for you too: I'm not sacrificing my general health to bulge a bit more. It uses different release times to feed your muslces during workout, recovery, and inactive phases so you don't get the munchies and ruin your diet. I mix it with milk and add a banana to change up the flavor sometimes. The vanilla flavor is also good in oatmeal.
I use 100% Whey from costco, it's made by cytosport, the muscle milk company so it tastes pretty good.
I think MuscleMilk has like 3000g of sugar per serving or something like that (clearly hyperbole but you get my point)
Protein and mass gainers are two different products. While mass gainers have a decent amount of protein, they also have a significant amount of carbs to pack on extra calories per serving.
Most of the recommendations here are for protein. That being said, every Optimum Nutrition (ON) product that I have tried has been quality and they do have a mass gainer product.
I usually keep quiet on most topics on here since I 'm new to the industry and don't want to make an ass of myself but now you're speaking my game. I've been a long time Optimum Whey user and doubt I'll switch brands anytime soon. It's super lean, mixes easily and comes in a ton of different flavors. I actually keep a tub at my desk at all times. If you're looking to gain weight then you should try something else. Optimum makes a product called Serious Mass that I've heard good things about. Some of those "weight gainers" are pretty hard to swallow but it's something you just sort of have to deal with. Look for more calories, you have to eat big to get big.
I am glad I could be your first post! But seems like everyone is into that Optimum stuff. I think I will give it a try. I have no idea what I am doing really.
I just shy away from the protein stuff as a whole unless I'm about to play a couple games of basketball or something like that. Personally, I've found the most rewarding thing to be running 2-3 miles a day, followed by a workout with pull ups, sit ups, push ups, and squats. You'll be more Kevin Durant than LeBron James but you'll be very athletically cut while still maintaining a natural lifestyle.
You drink protein pre-basketball? I would vomit.
I meant a protein bar, certainly not a whole shake.
Be aware of the effect that introducing protein powder to your diet will have on your farts. You know how sometimes at the office you can stealthily fire a few off into your chair and no one but you knows? Doesn't work that way with protein shake farts... you can ask my cube buddy at the office....
^ only trying to get a chuckle, apologies if offense taken. Moving along:
Does GasEx work on this? Or is that only for beans, etc.....Agree with Optimum Whey. Double dutch chocolate with milk.
No Shotgun pre, Pro-NOS post
4 Hour Body is all the protein I need. Did that not make sense? That's okay, I've made it my goal to include 4HB in every exercise-related topic on WSO.

How big are those scoops??? If they are smaller than the ones I take, I'm sold too.... I'm not liking what I am using that much...
Just started using Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydro Whey because it's supposed to be the best of the best. I'm doing the Four Hour Body thing, and protein in the morning gets me past eating right when I wake up, which I hate. Can't complain about it too loudly, though. I've lost 25 pounds so far in about two months.
Edmundo I am proud of you! How much aiming for?
Ideally I'd like to get down to 170, which would be a total of 65 pounds.
Well best of luck to you Edmundo! I know you can do it! I'll be praying that you have the strength to not stop! Remember: cardiocardiocardio and then more cardiocardio
Which is the best tasting one ? Taste is more important to me than a marginal different in protein content.
A little advice guys: 1. stay out of GNC, that place sucks and is overpriced. 2. Buy protein on content and price, not for taste. Stop being a pussy and chug it as fast as you can. When you go through 5+pounds of it a month, it gets expensive. I buy mine from Sam's Club for $27 per 5 pounds.
