how often do employers do reference checks?
For investment banks, and also for junior internships in general, how often do employers ask for references?
I'm worried because I've only had two internships, and for one internship, i'm pretty sure my supervisor is no longer working there, and for the other one, I don't think my supervisor will have a glowing review of me. As in, he will probably just say yea he was fine, w/e nothing special.

Before starting full time, my BB contacted all of my previous employers for references.
did you provide contact information?
I did not
At my BB they outsource this to a third party who seemed thorough - checked all my references, criminal records and I believe even a bankruptcy check. They couldn't reach one of my former managers (on leave) so they got me to provide an alternative for that job.
This, but note that since they are "outsourcing to a 3rd party", that 3rd party isn't going to ask about whether you were a rockstar, average employee, etc. - their job is to make sure you worked there roughly when you said you did, and that's about it. I've rarely ever heard of an entry level job at a reasonably-sized company reference checking for job performance.
fryguy22 is on point, that's the most common type of reference check from my experience as well. Occasionally, I have seen the people looking to hire you (MD/VPs mainly) contact a previous boss for reference if they cant make up their mind about you or if it's really close between you and another candidate and they just want a bigger picture before making a decision.
Never heard of a firm actually doing a "reference check" nowadays. Firms outsource it to third parties to just verify salary, dates, and job title. Only time they may is if it is a small firm. HR at a big firm doesn't have the time and energy to call each candidates references and ask if Johnny was a stellar employee.

I understand that large corporations have the HR/resources to perform extensive background checks. How is this process usually performed? Do they just call the people you list as references? Call HR for the companies that have HR? Demand Salary stubs? What questions do they ask? Or do they hire third party services to investigate/perform these checks?
