How safe is the US (for visitors) now?

How safe is the US for tourism (out of the NY/CA/Miami region) for tourism nowadays? Planning my vacations and I must say that while I love the country, been there many times for work and was treated really well, I'm kinda worried, from all I'm reading. Still safe to travel as a tourist?

don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting a civil war or something. Just that everywhere I read here is that we (foreign visitors) shouldn't venture out of the main urban areas as it can be dangerous. I don't have contacts there - that's why i ask.

Urban areas are actually the only ones with high crime rates. Chicago/NY/Detroit/Oakland/St Lous
Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

HA - the liberal press is at it again. Those of us who live here know that the urban areas as the ones to avoid because that is where the liberals congregate and you never know when they might decide to set the city on fire. whatever news you are reading that tells you the US is unsafe are lying to you and you need a new source for your information.

It has been getting a lot of media attention lately, especially after Trump's comments, as some people consider it a "no-go zone". There is an investigative journalist named Tim Pool who is doing a series on crime in Sweden, who has been getting a lot of views and media attention on his videos.

He picked Malmo as his target city, not really sure what he has found though since I haven't watched many of the videos. Here is his youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/Timcasts/videos

Philly and the south side of Chicago are about the safest places you can go. It is hard with all the fake news out there trying to make them look bad.

El Paso Texas is fantastic this time of year. You can go to Juarez Mexico! I was there once, I had a fantastic time. It is pretty high class and people like to flaunt their money.

I strongly recommend you go to Detroit. 8 mile is a road that has a lot of historic churches.

One thing Americans love is being told any flaws you might see with our country. Particularly if it is after midnight and we are drunk. I would recommend making sure the conversation includes firearms, economy and military history. A lot of us enjoy these discussions.

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.

Surely your homelands version of The Department of State has ample travel warnings suggesting all US travel be avoided at all costs.

Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

OP, if you felt safe when you've been here before, then you'll feel safe this time. Don't stay longer than what you tell the CBP and you are more than welcome here. Overstay your Visa, and break the law, and you could get in trouble but otherwise you're going to be totally fine/safe unless you venture into some sketchy areas of different cities (literally the same situation in any country around the world) and then you might not feel as safe.

safer than whatever shithole you're from. only difference is our shit gets televised because we are the best USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA

Not sure why you were unable to get any legitimate response, but you will be fine. Not sure where you are planning to go, but there are of course some cities that have neighborhoods that can be extremely violent and dangerous. The good news is, because you're a tourist, you likely won't accidentally end up there; they're out of center city and out of the way.

Border Patrol treatment will depend on where you are coming from and your reason for attempting to enter the US. Realistically, you won't be deported.

It sounds like part of your concern is that Trump supporters will harass you. If this is really the case, it might make you feel better that in most cities that I can expect someone to want to visit in the US, most people voted for a candidate other than Trump, if this even maters to you. Additionally, in the aforementioned cities, people will be thoroughly used to tourists and foreigners and won't give a shit.

Enjoy your time in the United States, and I hope you get more useful advice if you are lost than you have so far been offered in this thread.

Thanks for the help; As I mentioned before I never had any problems whatsoever in the places I visited, but the news of people being harassed in the streets got me a bit worried. I know that obviously a lot is just media overreaction, but still...I imagined it would be a bit better to get some reasonable info here than reading websites who basically paint all Trump voters as violent and the US as being in civil war, to the point where respected correspondents invented attacks against their families.

Dude as long as you don't go to Compton and walk around with a red shirt, or go to five points in Denver at 3Am, or start yelling the N-word out in Harlem no one will do anything to you.

We have weird protests that sometimes people go crazy but if you stay out of dangerous areas and do not piss anything off anyone nothing will happen. Most cities have Indians, Pakistanis, Mexicans, blacks, hispanics, Russians, and everything inbetween. No one gives a shit.

Stay in the liberal hotspots. If you venture 10 or so miles out of any major liberal city, you'll find roaming lawless conservative bands of trump supporters looking to mess with anyone that is not white.

I'm part Jewish and don't dare venture out of the Greater NYC area. The only time I travel is to LA and I make sure I stay in the city.

Back when I lived in the deep south. I made sure to always have a shotgun in my car, next to my bed, and then a concealed carry pistol to make sure no one fucked with me.

LOL of course you were going to get fucked with asking that question.

General answer is "yes". The more specific answer is yes as long as you avoid areas that are associated with gangs or drug trafficking. As a tourist even in "bad" cities like St. Louis you will generally be spending most of your time in gentrified downtown areas and not in the outer regions of cities that suffer from significant racial tensions.

I'll assume you use the word "literally" like a millennial and aren't trying to exaggerate. I get it because I live in Chicago and my parents think I live in a war zone, but you don't think this question is asking for a little ball-busting?

OP, bad stuff happens everywhere. But most crime isn't random. I'm not saying the question is preposterous but it's ripe for this type of response.

I fully understand places tend to be much safer in reality than media perceptions of them. And I believe places like Chicago get an unjustifiably bad rep.

However you cant deny the facts that the crime rate per capita in the US is significantly higher than any other developed western country. Therefore the OP is getting a lot of unfair criticism for a legit question; whilst it still may be off the mark.

No offence to people in Peripheral us cities, but do intercontinental tourists really go on holiday to st louis/denver/detroit/any of these places mentioned above?

Denver? Seriously? That's the place any pleb flies into to go skiing anywhere in Colorado, unless you are a super cheap fuck and fly to Colorado Springs.

You should try Opa Locka, charming neighborhood just west of Miami Beach. Source: Friendly local guide went out of his way to show us arround, even attempting to park our car for us.. all while waving a gun to scare all the hipsters away.

Come visit us in Texas, that is unless you piss your pants at the sight of a gun. In that case you might want to visit someplace else.

The honest answer. Unless you walk around wearing an "I love Trump" shirt, or an "I hate Trump" shirt, you have nothing to worry about.

Wearing the wrong one of those two shirts in the wrong place however, could get you killed

I'm so glad that others made a snarky remark so I don't have to.

big cities in america are as safe as big cities in other developed nations. you need to watch your pockets, walk with purpose, and so on. but you don't need to worry about terrorism or the like any more than other cities.

where are you from? the places that are the most dangerous (e.g. the bluff in ATL or 9th ward in NoLA) are outside of all major tourist areas. as said before, the unsafe areas are going to be poor neighborhoods and there's very little crossing over. even in Chiraq, you'll be fine, relatively speaking.

also, if you're muslim or sikh and not in NYC/SF, just expect some glances. you won't be in danger, but you will draw attention (much like a white guy in jeans and a Yankees hat in Pakistan would draw attention).
