I heard of a story once giving insight on the HLHZ Dallas office. There was an MD, now fired (not because of a lay-off), who asked for screenshots every 20 mins. It was done to make sure everyone was working. There were no reminders and if you missed one screenshot or if the work didn’t seem productive you were fired. Although I wasn’t specifically told any were fired, I can assume there were at least some.
I also heard from another person they had worked interns over 100 hours.
I would assume if you fucked the MDs wife (or husband) you would be shown the exit. Hope this helps
i knew an intern who just stopped turning up. that's a surefire way to get binned. i mean, he did get mugged at knifepoint, but still...
Get arrested, show up late, leave aggressively early, do something dumb at a company event, abuse the expense policy
Just accept your fate as a slave for 8 weeks. Constantly remind yourself that the FOMO is worth it while your friends are out enjoying everything the city has to offer.
People on this forum tend to think that the hours are the hard part. Anyone can do anything for 8 weeks. Working hard isn't hard. What's hard is turning down invitations to go out with friends and meet girls to do some mind-numbing work that realistically could wait until tomorrow.
Think that's hard? Try telling your parents who flew into the city to see you for the first time in 10 months that they should "go ahead and order" because you cant get out of the office to meet them at the restaurant downstairs. "Can we do breakfast instead?" All of this in favor of some mind-numbing work that could realistically wait until tomorrow.
Think that's hard? Try telling your fiance who has been planning a dream vacation for the last 2 years that you might have to cancel again. This isn't the first time you've defaulted on the goodwill loan you were forced to take out last time work got between you. Will this push her over the edge? The planning process is the opiate that distracted her from all of the BS that's been adding up in the first place. Devastating
Think that's hard? Try telling your kids you wont make it to their birthday or school play. Again -- all in favor of some mind-numbing work that could realistically wait until tomorrow.
You get the picture. Keep perspective. Working hard isn't hard. Sacrifice is hard.
When you become a full time, accept your fate as a slave for at least a year and constantly remind yourself that the FOMO is worth it while your friends are out enjoying everything the city has to offer.
Why can't you just wait until tomorrow... ?
Not OP but to my understanding it's because the industry is relatively commoditized and incredibly competitive. So for example, if a client asks an MD at GS to get them something and they don't do it quicker then MS then they might loose the deal. Not a full time analyst yet but from my short expeirence this is what drives a lot of the late nights doing work that realisitically could wait for tomorrow. Apologies if this is wrong or doesn't paint the full picture.
Who tf has a fiance and does an internship? Either you're to old to be doing an internship or to young to be having a fiance.
You forgot MBA interns...
sobering comment, appreciate your candor
Bring me a decaf at 9am..
Yes it is possible to be kicked out of an internship (FYI you aren’t being “kicked out” you are being fired).
An internship is part interview and part real job. Any fireable offense for a full time will apply for an intern. The key difference is that there is clear end date, so while poor performance will result in you not getting a return offer, you will rarely be fired mid internship for poor performance, outside of extreme situations (you stop showing up, you stop doing work, etc). Firms for the most part understand that people learn at different rates and different ways so it is usually worthwhile to see the performance throughout a summer, especially if the effort is still there.
But as I said before keep in mind that you represent the firm, and are employed by the firm during this time (being paid...) so all “common sense rules” (as I like to refer to things like don’t get blackout drunk, arrested, get in fight with a coworker, etc) apply.
Interned at a UMM bank on a trading floor. A girl was shown the door after repeatedly failing to follow instructions about attempting to make trades day one. Clearly had no idea what was going on and was done week 2.
Showing you don't care in every possible way:
Leave early, show up late, ignoring feedback, recurring mistakes, making no attempt to network/learn, dressing inappropriately(there's a lot of ways to go wrong here)
Most notably embarrassing yourself at a company event is probably the biggest one. hard to make a spectacle of yourself unless you are going out of your way but it happens lol
I interned with this Chinese kid at a credit fund my sophomore year. He could speak fluent english, but lacked any sort of social awareness in terms of communication skills. He would constantly make racist Chinese jokes because people would laugh. He then started learning pickup lines. At a company offsite, he said to a girl in HR, "Hi, XYZ. Do you have a mirror in your pants? Because I see myself in them." That was that final nail in the coffin and the kid didn't show up after that.
lmao
At the BNP Paribas spring week last year a kid got kicked out on the first day for asking how to insider trade.
Sleep with your MD's wife
Spurn you’re MD’s sexual advances
Wish I saw this earlier but a kid at my firm was fired from his internship for posting client information on his instagram story. He was basically trying to brag that he was working with rich clients. Someone screenshotted it and sent it to his manager, dude was fired. This happened last summer.
