How to prepare for consulting full-time recruiting
Hi everyone,
I am currently a junior at a semi-target. Unfortunately I didn't land an IBD SA internship, but I will be interning at a fortune 100 company in the insurance industry. I know that IBD FT recruiting might be extremely hard, so I am thinking more about consulting full-time recruiting in my senior year.
First, I am definitely going to work hard to try to secure a return offer from my internship company. Second, I was wondering if it's appropriate that I reach out to people in consulting now and network? Or should I wait until my internship ends? If I do get a return offer, I might have to respond within a month, which I estimate is mid-September. How can I get a offer in early September or something?
I would really appreciate your feedback and advice!

Getting ready for MBB recruiting (Originally Posted: 05/25/2015)
I just finished up my sophomore year at a semi target (top 10 public school) and need help with a decision regarding my internship this summer. I am currently set to work in the corporate finance division of a big 4, but a consulting position just opened up that I could transfer into. The main reason I hesitate in making the switch is that my gpa is low for MBB at a 3.5 and moving away from finance could restrict recruiting for BB ib if MBB doesn't work out next summer. Last summer I interned abroad at a startup in business development, so I don't have a lot of finance experience outside of the work that I am doing this summer. Would my most likely path to MBB be through ibanking, or is making the switch to consulting this summer enough to differentiate me from higher gpa candidates come recruiting season? I appreciate the help.
I'd say focus less on the firm and focus on what you want to do. A 3.5 GPA from a semi-target (what is this?) already makes you a long shot for MBB. If you are PRETTY SURE you want to do consulting, I see no reason why you should not take the Big4 consulting offer. It gives you an opportunity to test it out and maybe even land a FT position.
In terms of what would be more attractive from an MBB's eyes, I'd have to say the Big4 offer. A consulting position shows that you are serious about it, enjoyed the lifestyle, and already have the basics down so you can get going from day one.
It also sounds like you want to do some stepwise function of B4 Corporate Finance -> IB -> MBB. If you want to compare Big4 Consulting to IB from a MBB's eyes, I'd say they're about equal, unless you can get into a prestige IB like GS or MS.
