IBD firm starting up new office and looking for volunteers
hi all,
i'm an incoming analyst at a well-respected mm/eb firm based in NYC. my firm is starting up a new office in california. they are looking for a single analyst to join them. i'm strongly considering it. i went to high school in the bay area for three years when i was younger and loved it there, although i've never lived in NYC.
does anybody have any experience with joining a new office? can anybody comment on the potential upsides/risks associated with it? my thoughts are:
risks:
- office not doing well, either gets closed or no bonus
- no recognition when recruiting for PE/HF
upsides:
- lots of entrepreneurial learning opportunity at a new office
- potential to join a fast-growing office if it indeed does well
basically just wondering if the potential upsides outweigh the potential downsides and if it makes sense to join my firm's new office in california
lol your risks are focused on exit opps while upsides are focused on long-term growth - not sure what to think
what do you mean? i feel like my considerations are logical. would you mind elaborating?
The point Torchic is trying to make is its unclear whether you want to stay in IB long-term or head into PE. If you want to head into PE and think NYC and a more established group will get you there do that. If you think IB is the way to go and want an interesting experience go with the Bay Area. Either way though I do not think you will lessen your chances of transitioning to PE. Do a good job, potentially get a strong recommendations from the MDs?
I cannot speak from my own experience.
