IBD vs Quant Analyst
I have a little confusion when it comes to job applications. Investment analyst vs quant analyst vs research analyst vs hedge fund research analyst. Can anyone please explain how the average day and duties are different for each one? Which job is more fast-paced, required to communicate with people more, etc?
These can (or can not) all be interchangeable titles depending on the firm. To get a clear answer you'll need to post job descriptions.
Quant vs. IB Analyst (Originally Posted: 06/13/2013)
Hello fellow monkeys,
I have been doing some research on the internet, looking at quantnet.com and other sites, but would like to hear it from this forum group...
Being a dual major in Finance and Actuarial Science, I am somewhat torn with what I want to pursue as a career when I graduate. I definitely want to get my masters out of school. If I go the "quant" road, I will go for my MFE and if I go analyst route, I will get a Finance masters degree, and at the same time, start my CFA. I have good grades, about a 3.5 GPA from a non-target school up in Albany, NY.
I have taken all the relevant math courses to get into an MFE program (calc 1-3, diffey q, linear, calc-based probability, calc-bases, stats, etc) as well as some computer programming (Java, Python).
I am just somewhat confused as to the types of positions I can hold with each, which position is better in terms of job openings and job growth, and which will allow for better pay/compensation. I love stock trading and analyzing. I do models for a company now and also provide insight to a local financial advising firm on stocks and other markets in terms of what I consider "buys" and "sells."
Any input and insight is always helpful. Thanks.
