Interning at Bulge Bracket FIG, but want to get into PE, what should I do?

Next summer I'll be interning at a BB (Think JPM, GS, MS) within FIG. I almost 100% sure I want to get into PE after two years, and after talking to many people within IB, I keep getting the same message back that doing FIG IB is going to pigeonhole me and put me at a disadvantage for PE recruiting. As well, the group I'm in mainly focuses on banks, which is even more specialized. Like I mentioned, I'm pretty set on PE, as well as I'm worried FIG may become boring and very bland.

What should I do? I have plenty of time to network, so how should I handle potentially seeking out another FT offer while I'm still waiting to begin my internship?
