Interview PE after accepting offer?
Happy holidays and Merry Christmas!
The scenarios I'm thinking of are:
-
Take interview, get offer, renege on firm I signed
-
Take interview, fail, no harm done but probably won't get another chance
-
Take interview, firm finds out, I get screwed with both companies (no idea how this would happen though)
-
Reject interview, ask to stay in touch, have a chance down the line
-
Reject interview, ask to stay in touch, no chance down the line
Would really appreciate any guidance on how to approach this. Thanks!
Reneging is fine, could only get in trouble if it was IB or other PE to PE
if you don’t mind me asking how did you pull this off relatively after recruiting timelines? but congrats-if you want it go for it. you’re the only one looking out for yourself!!
I don't think Scenario 3 could realistically ever happen. I suggest you interview and see where the process goes. If you do get the offer, which is a statistically improbable event (no offense to you), you can then determine if it is a right fit and worth reneging. Thinking about hypotheticals without an offer is a wasted exercise.
I know someone who reneged on an F500 CorpFin FLDP role for a PE analyst role. Never came up with the new firm, and it was a difficult conversation but the F500 didn’t contact the new employer. The F500 pried for details, but after my friend disclosed that it was a completely different role / industry they stopped. A few years later and they currently make probably 3x what they would have have in the program, so while it’s an individual decision it worked out in this case
