Is it worth it to network with people not in IBD?

I am combing through the alumni database trying to compile a good list of people to network with... my question is: is it worth it to try and network with people not in IBD, but at a good firm? ie. S&T at GS or IM at MS if my end goal is a job in IBD?

Any thoughts?

Obviously, if someone isn't in BB IBD, they aren't worth knowing. And forget it if they don't work in finance.....a plumber? What on earth is that???

Relax, I was giving the BBs as an example... I just meant a firm that has more than just IBD.

:) I'm just messing with you, it was too easy, sorry.

If you're under a time crunch, then go straight for the people that can help, otherwise, network with as many people as you can at all times. Examples: 1. A girl I run into all the time in the coffee shop is the personal assistant to the CEO. 2. I bartend on the weekends and most customers have no idea what I do during the week. 3. The barber I go to is old friends with the chairman of a BB. 4. One of the MD's here has three siblings.....who are also MD's at different companies.

you never know who someone knows

Haha sarcasm is tough on an online message board!

But seriously, how would I go about networking with someone in a different division? I feel like they wouldn't care too much to help me once I tell them I'm after a spot in lBD...

Your question is too general to have any answer, there are too many variables to consider. A person may have worked in banking and then moved to some other division and be able to help you, or they may have been rejected by banking and be bitter about it. The best approach is to state what you're trying to do sometime early in the relationship, and if you get the impression they can help then keep in touch. People working in the division you want are the priority, and everyone comes after that: you have to allocate your time accordingly.

And yeah, sarcasm is hard to tell. Written humor apparently isn't my strong point. Oh well, so good for a career in writing.
