Is majoring in Comp Sci a disadvantage?
I'm a first year college student and I'm considering becoming a comp sci major and recruiting for investment banking. Do any of you think it will be a disadvantage to do this? Like, will any of the bankers/recruiters think, "This guy probably wants to work in tech. I don't think he will commit to us. Next."?
Thoughts?
Just be careful about how recruiting at your university is structured. My uni has a business school and the OCR runs through the career center in the B-school and it's almost impossible for non-business/econ majors to get in the action unless they network like crazy. Not this way at other schools tho, so ymmv.
Yeah, no need for me to worry about that. My college doesn't have separate schools for business, engineering, etc. It's just one undergrad liberal arts school that gets recruited.
The major by itself isn’t really going to be an issue. But things to think about:
1) why do you want to major in comp sci? Is that something you really enjoy? Is that the type of work you want to do? If so, it isn’t about whether banks will skip over you in recruiting, you should be thinking about what is going to make you happy (and what will you enjoy enough to succeed in)
2) if you major in CS you will need a good story as to why you are interested in banking and why you chose CS. There are many ways of explaining this, but you will be asked
If you aren’t at a “target” or similar, it will be a bit tougher as it won’t show the same interest as others, but it is a tough major so a high GPA + extracurricular activities will be enough.
Yeah, I'm at a target but I'm in a tough spot where I am interested in IB but I want to learn more about computers/programming to see if my mind is wired for tech. If I end up liking it, I might drop IB altogether and go for swe roles later on.
