Lazard vs. MS? (NYC)
Which is the better place to start one's career? Talking at the analyst (IBD) level of course. Thanks guys.

MS if M&A, M&T. Otherwise, Lazard. Everyone else saying Lazard is better don't understand that MS M&A/M&T/Tech have insane exits.
After seeing exits for this recruiting cycle, MS on average places much better than Lazard. I would caveat that by saying Lazard RX places lights out and Lazard HC places well.
Would you consider Lazard NY a sweatshop?
Friends there say it's an intense place, but they like the people.
I would go with MS - the only EB's I'd consider over GS/MS is EVR M&/PJT RX and potentially CVP if you're looking to become a career banker.
The only area where Laz is better is pay - and this may only be about 20k/yr since Laz tends to be cheaper than most EBs.
Edit - Forgot there's an obsession with EBs on WSO
Would all EBs be considered sweatshops?
I would pick Lazard.
If you have a good profile either firm will get you looks from top-tier funds. Lazard has MS beat on pure advisory focus, higher pay, leaner teams.
Would also pick Lazard. Friends at Laz are way happier than those at MS. Got same looks during on-cycle for PE, pay is higher (think they just increased comp), and they like the culture/people better. Seems like it's gotten less sweaty because they were losing kids to Evercore over the hours.
I’d pick Laz as well, you’ll trade in RX for ECM/DCM at MS, which I’d say have worse exit ops. Plus Laz is a lot less cyclical, speaking to that RX strength.
