Take a look at the Meermin Double Monks
https://www.meermin.es/articulo.php?idArt=2338
I doubt you'll find better quality for this kind of money: ~$185 with shipping but be aware you'll have to pay customs once they arrive (~$50). I realize that puts you slightly over your budget but I doubt you'll find a quality pair of leather monks for less.
@Woodie, I like a little bit of tread on the bottom ... so many slick floors in NYC ... would it be crazy if I brought to a shop to have them added on?
No, absolutely not. Living anywhere where they'll get exposure to rain and snow I would recommend putting a rubber sole on. Meermin themselves do a Dainite-type sole that you can ask for - not sure what their policy is though. Otherwise bring them to your local cobbler.
spend the money and get a quality pair of shoes. Check out the Allen Edmond monkstraps
Marti Kahn Man, link?
Alfred Sargent. Pricey, but sure are nice.

I just bought these and this is how they went over:
[MD walks into my office] MD: Whats the implied rate on the pacific north... wtf are those.
Me: Monstraps.. 2.0. Allen Ed..
MD: You're an idiot.
Your MD has too much time on his hands. I guarantee a busy MD doesn't care.
