Looking to move into consulting from BB less than year after graduation

I currently work at a BB in a non-IB, front office role in New York. I started in summer 2019 after graduating from a top 20 undergrad. I am getting good experience working with clients on a variety of different deals but I really want to go into consulting, specifically strategy consulting, sooner rather than later. My questions are:

  • Is it a bad idea to leave such a big bank so soon? Will it look bad to leave a BB to a smaller consulting firm? (I am assuming that the only positions I will be able to get are at smaller firms)
  • Is this even possible? Do consulting firms have positions open up for recent grads with some work experience after the new year?

Anyone done this before or know someone who has?

Yes, this is possible (have seen some people make the move). The position would be Analyst, meaning that with less than 1 year or experience you would start from the bottom again. The experienced gained would help you land interviews but wouldn't be enough to pull rank and start higher than an Analyst role. It won't necessarily look bad as long as you craft your story well and make it sound believable. One thing I will say is, if you make the move DO NOT leave that firm for at least 18 months. Otherwise jumping around that often as such an early stage of your career won't look good

Echo PharmaGuy. You will probably start as an analyst (but maybe can negotiate to be a "Senior Analyst" type role, if the firm has those roles.) But still sort of start at the bottom. However, with your BB experience, you are probably slightly better prepared compared to the rest of the Analyst class. Which brings me to the following point - ask about promotion cycles and understand if the firms have off-cycle promotions. That would mean, you could make the case earlier than usual, and sort of cover up for the fact that you brought in some experience to begin with. The key to making that case is to act and perform like associates (or whatever the next position is) - that basically says you are already performing at that level, and a promo is just a process to formalize it. So keep an eye out for the characteristics of folks in the next level and emulate that while you are there. Firms LOVE to see that and often would promote such people without any push back.
