M&A Boutique Exit Opps

Will be working at a small boutique this summer. Deals range from 200mm - 3bn and it is exclusively focused on one industry group. Would there be potential exits to MM PE from this bank, or would it be wise to try for FT at a BB? Couldn’t find any former analysts from this bank that transitioned to PE since it’s relatively new so wanted to ask here.

Both are possible frankly. In the end, provided the technical skills are the same as what you would get from interning at an MM and BB, you'll be ok. The plus of a boutique is that you may be more responsibility earlier on and play a bigger role on deals which you can sell the crap out of on your CV. Unfortunately, brand names lead to more brand names so an BB intern may have a better chance at landing a MF FT role than you. If the end goal is PE, does the PE brand name matter too much? I think MM PE would be doable and once there you can always try to recruit for higher 'prestige' PE firms after you gain some experience

I certainly think you will at least have a fair shot. There are a lot of pretty solid boutique banks in various verticals that people outside may not know of, but are well respoected within the sector. Especially if you work on deals within the range of 200mm to 3bn, your experience will likely be solid. It may take more networking or reliance on actually putting yourself out there for PE recruiters rather than letting them come to you, but nonetheless it should be possible.
