Major WSO Back End Upgrade Happening 9pm ET Aug 18 for ~24 Hours

Dearest Fellow Primates -- after ~10 months of hard work from the dev team we are close to finally migrating from a very dated platform (Drupal 7) to a much more modern one (Drupal 8). While undoubtedly this will feel like a downgrade initially, we hope that you will be patient with us and help us with bug reporting and feature requests. This will really help bring WSO and the platform into 2020 instead of being back on tech that is more 2015...

Here is the schedule 9:00pm ET Aug 18 (Tuesday) - Site is frozen. Still readable but no new users, new threads or new comments 9-12am ET Aug 19 (Tues->Wed) - Backups and new server prep 12am-8am - Migration to Drupal 8 and testing 3pm? ET Aug 19 (Wed) - new site turned on!!! Ideally, by late morning/early afternoon we can relaunch WSO on Drupal 8 without many issues but having done this for 14 years no matter how much we test I know doing the real thing is usually more complicated (especially now when the site has over 750,000 members, millions of comments and over 600,000 threads)....

A few requests

  1. Please be patient with us. We're a small team with only 4 developers and our highest priorities will be that the main functionality is working in our LMS for our students and the forums for our community.
  2. What did we break or lose? We've been testing now for several months, but I am sure we missed stuff. What do you see is now broken or missing that you use. some of this we know is missing but it's possible we just missed it.... you reporting this here in the thread is SUPER helpful, so thank you!
  3. Once we make the leap, the dev team will still be very busy with testing and making sure we get some high priority issues solved before jumping to any new features, but we'll try our best. Thanks again to all the WSO primates and see you on the other side soon! Patrick

Ha, bananas staying! If you don't feel like much has changed then that is a huge relief /success.

If pagespeed sucks and/or you have issues with posting or commenting, notifications /logging in, Api mobile app, applying to jobs, company database... Well then that's what we'll be scrambling to fix later this week!

Drupal is pretty sick.

FYI- on mobile chrome browser the user profile icons don’t show up.

how do I get notifications when a thread I want to follow has new posts? I could do this a month ago and now I can't?

Why does the mobile app not have a moniker next to threads indicating "new posts" and highlight said new posts in yellow?

Why does when expanding "view replies" make the scroll of the page go bat-shit crazy?

Why do I get huge amount of errors that make long posts/replies I write up disappear due to some error? I lost 20 minutes of writing, I'm absolutely not fucking around a second time on that.

What does Drupal 8 provide that brings this into 2020?

How do you make this site function more like Reddit, Blind, Github forums, Stack Overflow or literally any other popular 2020 forum site? I would think WSO is probably up there in terms of most engaged and fastest growing specialty forum sites if we have 750k members.

1.  how do I get notifications when a thread I want to follow has new posts? I could do this a month ago and now I can't?

Notifications were added back several weeks ago so I'm not sure if you can be more specific what you were seeing before that seems to be gone now?  Are you talking about on desktop, mobile site or mobile app -- and in what OS?  Thank you, we're checking this again since this was the primary complaint when we first switched.  I know we have plans to make this better with a full subscription/notification page that shows all subs across all systems in one place for members

2. Why does the mobile app not have a moniker next to threads indicating "new posts" and highlight said new posts in yellow?

I'm not sure.  jgsantos can you please give us an update here ASAP?

3. Why does when expanding "view replies" make the scroll of the page go bat-shit crazy?

This was an issue as recently as early last week but I am now not able to recreate this issue.  Can you be specific and help us recreate this issue so we can find it.  I know exactly what you are talking about but from what I can see and the site testers, this has been fixed.  Not for you?  again, please give us specifics if possible please.

4.  Why do I get huge amount of errors that make long posts/replies I write up disappear due to some error? I lost 20 minutes of writing, I'm absolutely not fucking around a second time on that.

Was there any sort of specific error given by the system when that happened?  truly apologize for this -- very frustrating.  This is only happening since the migration on Aug 19 or been happening to you for a while?  Any specifics you can give us will help us get rid of it.

5.  What does Drupal 8 provide that brings this into 2020?

I think this article explains a bit more what was improved from D7--> D8.  https://medium.com/@mindfiresolutions.usa/drupal-8-vs-drupal-7-22d95b6e…; With a small dev team, admittedly the UX side of the migration has been poor...but given the complexity of completely having to rebuild the site from the ground up (no small task for a small team) I'd say they did the best they could.  It doesn't mean we're happy with where we are, we will keep getting better and there are still a LOT of issues, but know that we are trying our best.

6.  How do you make this site function more like Reddit, Blind, Github forums, Stack Overflow or literally any other popular 2020 forum site? I would think WSO is probably up there in terms of most engaged and fastest growing specialty forum sites if we have 750k members.

This is a great/fair question.  I think with the exception of Blind, you are talking about companies that have thousands of developers, not 4 like us.  Even Blind, raised $25m I'd argue has likely 5x the # of developers we have.  This is not to say we can't and will do better.  We will because we listen to our members and really take these criticisms personally.

I know we can and will do better and I hope that we will get there fast so that we don't lose you and other members.  As an update, you can follow this thread which we are updating with fixes daily: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/new-wso-live-report-bugs-please&…;

Thank you for quick reply. Happy to provide troubleshooting feedback.

1. There used to be a little "subscribe" icon on each page, where if you click it, you became subscribed to the thread and then whenever new posts were made your bell icon would catch the alert with a link to that new reply. I can't seem to find that across web, mobile-site or mobile app anymore.

3. I will see if this occurs again but it had been recently occurring, it may have been fixed since last week

4. I've gotten a bunch of actually different errors at points in time, i think last one was "you do not have permission" and before then it was some specific error code. I remember writing a huge reply a few weeks ago and was very disappointed i forgot to hit control copy on my mobile phone before hitting reply. No worries, just hope it is fixed and someone is reporting this.

6. I personally like GitHub forum functionality the best (followed by StackOF/Reddit), I'm actually not a huge fan of Blind forum itself (has bad comment sort features) but they certainly achieved a very clean mobile app and extremely sleek inter-company and intra-company interaction process. I'm not sure about others but I barely use the mobile platform today because the desktop site just works better for now but we all know that mobile users will make the majority of interactions sooner or later.
