MBB Full-Time Feeders
After being brutalized by IB summer analyst recruiting, I'm interested to hear about mgmt consulting tracks at MBB. I'm about to be a junior in college, and would appreciate any info on the following questions for recruiting at MBB:
- Are most full-time hires out of undergrad sourced directly from the prior year's summer interns like in banking?
- If you don't complete an internship at the firm the prior summer, are you at a disadvantage when trying to recruit for FT?
- Approximately what is the return offer rate for people who go through the summer intern program?
Any color is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
No but depends on the firm, No, close to 100%
Thanks for the info. Are summer internships not really that important then? I would imagine that it would help a lot to be an intern the summer before you graduate if you're trying to land a FT job.
? Not sure I get your question.
Of course it's generally better to get the internship, because you are most likely going to get a return offer, which means you are almost guaranteeing yourself a full time job by the time you graduate.
That being said, not getting an offer for the internship does not mean you are at a significant disadvantage if you decide to recruit again for full time.
To provide another data point, I interned in the NY office of one of MBB this summer (2019), and I'm pretty sure 100% of my class of ~30 interns got return offers. Almost everyone in my class has already signed their offers/is planning to (with the exception of a couple who are thinking of doing tech or grad school instead), so there are very few spots left for full-time hires who didn't do the internship. For my firm at least, I think the rates are similar across the other offices, so yes, it would be significantly tougher to get in full-time just based on numbers.
At least for my MBB, almost all of the summers in my cohort got returns and came back, but there are significantly more FT positions available such that it’s not a downside if you didn’t enter as an intern. I’d estimate only 30-40% of my office’s new analysts are returning summers.
Which office?
