Meeting Attire
I'm currently an accounting intern at a fortune 100 company and am trying to get into trading. Luckily, my boss knows a lot of people and has set up a meeting for me with a trader at Stephens. It is not a job interview, only a meeting to talk about how to "get into trading".
My question is, what should I wear? A suit comes to mind, but would it look bad if I was way over the top (because I'm assuming these guys wear business casual). I was thinking dress pants, a button-down and then a camel hair jacket over the top?
Thanks for the help, I want to make as good an impression as I can.
What is the level and age of the trader?
suit = serious, camel hair jacket = douche
IMO wear the suit man
I mean, you want a job right? Why wouldn't you wear a suit then?
The guy I'm meeting with is probably about 50. I'm not sure how high up he is but according to my boss "he has made more money than everybody in our group here put together"
Also according to my boss, this guy is a "country boy" (which makes sense because I am currently living in Arkansas). I just didn't want to look pretentious by wearing a suit.
Ask him or your manager what he'll be wearing, and match it. IMHO, it's an appropriate question. If he's wearing b-caszh, you want to be wearing the same.
I thought you were in NYC - hmmm.. when you put it like that a suit may not be the best way to go as traders are generally casual and seeing how this is Arkansaw maybe you might want to go with nice sweater over button down and slacks
My boss says "I've never seen him wear a tie before".
Sweater over OCBD. Wool trousers. Brown bluchers.
Just out of curiosity, do you go to the Ask Andy About Clothing forums?
Dude, wear a button up shirt and dress pants. Done.
A formal interview requires a wso/">suit, but if you are just meeting with someone then dress professionally, but not all out. Wear a sweater if you want, whatever. As long as your not wearing jeans and a T shirt you will be fine. What comes out of your mouth will count for a lot more than whats on your back .
That's what I was thinking too. Thanks a lot for the help guys.
I agree a suit might seem a little much. Wear a blazer though, maybe without a tie. And, I'd go navy but that's just me.
People wear cowboy boots to the office in that part of the country, right?
