Metallica Fans
Any Metallica (or Metal) fans here? If you have not been following this, Metallica just did a series of 30 Year Anniversary concerts.
Man what would I not have given up to be there? Metallica has been an inspiration to me for the last decade and they have been doing this for THIRTY YEARS now.
There was everything you could ask for. Jason Newsted playing with Metallica was an awesome sight. Metallica called up all these obscure English/Danish Metal bands that inspired them to play. Rob Halford was there, so were Ozzy and Geezer in the fourth night. And surprise, surprise Dave Mustaine shredded with Metallica after 30 years on the 4th night. That was emotional for me.
Obviously, there are things which I did not mention. But that was the best thing a true Metallica fan could see.

I really hope they release all 4 gigs on DVD.
I don't know how to embed this video, but this one is worth watching. (There is a Megadeth fan here who's name I'm forgetting...MMBinNC or something like that)
Love Metallica, I'll have to check it out!
love metallica till black album, anything after was downhill for me
Here here.
They really went to shit fast after Cliff (RIP) passed.
Somewhat agree although I thought Load/Reload wasn't bad. Also S&M was a solid production & cool ass DVD to watch.
But yeah, they are old geezers now. St. Anger was trash.
I don't especially hate any of Metallica's new stuff, but it's just not as good. The fact is, post-Black Album, they took a decidedly hard rock direction for the next two albums. Then they tried something new with St. Anger. You have to respect that they would do something a bold as taking out all the solos and having that obnoxious snare, but St. Anger was utterly terrible.
Now the music is back to where it used to be on like ...and Justice for All, but the problem is that James is trying to apply a hard rock mentality to metal songs. The sticking point is this: James sucks at singing. Prior to the Black Album, Metallica was kind of yelling, and then it was a mix in the Black Album. His voice can go the hard rock route, but their style of metal is too caustic to do both at once. It's like having the vocal styling of the Unforgiven II over the music of Ride the Lightning. It doesn't work- so what does James do instead? He tries to keep up the pace of his hard rock vocals with faster music. And you get songs like All Nightmare Long- great music, but just barely passable vocals IMHO. He can't sing, his yelling or whatever you can call it is good. In the aforementioned song I'd say that's the "Hallucination. Heresy. Still you run, whats to come, whats to be." On the other hand when he does sustained vocals it is terrible. Like, "Hunt you down without mercy Hunt you down all nightmare long"
I don't know if they used to use a vocal effect on James, performed in a different key, used terrible recording equipment for vocals, or it's just his gay vocal lessons- but James' voice has deteriorated more in the studio than most artists I know (metal or otherwise).
Also, anyone else notice the increasing prominence of the drums in their past 2 albums. Both St. Anger and Death Magnetic have really loud and IMHO annoying drums. Don't get me wrong, I like drums. But the snare is still so overused in Metallica idk wtf Lars is thinking.
Awesome!
Love Metallica. And Justice for All is one of my all time favorites!
James- they've always been, and always will be, my favorite band. They're the greatest metal act of all time, period.
Amen to that brother. I've listened to Metallica through the good times, and their music has gotten me through bad times.
I don't care which album it is, Metallica will always be the best band for me.
I liked Death Magnetic, even if I did have a couple issues with it.
Sepultura or gtfo
How about Grip Inc. or some old school Pantera.
lol I just got a tip from someone on youtube to make it sound better on there. Switch to 240p- it sounds more faded and like their 80s stuff. Not the same, but better- he still keeps trying to sing and sustains notes that I don't think he can hold. (e.g. Cyanide 2:25-2:40)
You are so wrong MMBinNC. I can definitely sing. Have you heard me on The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters?
What I'm saying is James can't mesh his new vocal style with the old instrumental style. Both the songs you mentioned are slow. I's not like I dislike the hard rock version of Metallica. Hell, The Unforgiven II is one of the best songs Metallica has made IMHO.
Even so, as a metal vocalist James has deteriorated. Listen to any real metal song by them post-BA. Most, if not all, are on Death Magnetic (re-Load and Load were hard rock, St. Anger was trash). And that is what I'm talking about. Look at the sustained vocals on DM and compare them to his old ones. That is all I'm saying.
Metallica is still one of the best metal bands out there. The best bands are always gonna be compared to the best and themselves in the past. All I'm saying is that they have trended down. That said, I think the trajectory is very similar to what happened with Megadeth. They got increasingly commercial until they released an album that pretty much everyone hated except for a few songs (Risk) and since have built themselves back up. I think Metallica is gonna do the same. No one can say The System Has Failed was as good as Symphony of Destruction, but they have made better and better albums since. Since Risk, Megadeth has gone back to their old style more and more, with every album being better than the last IMHO- but still not as good as Rust in Peace. I think Metallica will build themselves back up,St. Anger showed them that they were not infallible and should listen to their fans more. (Megadeth learned that they couldn't get any more commercial). I think James will go back towards his old style more and more now that he's not singing these harmonies and stuff and hopefully he is recording 80's-esque vocals again soon.
@MMBinNC: What did you think of Dave playing with Metallica? Did you see the video? It was awesome man.
I've been going through all the videos (the otheres with dAve, the ones with Ozzy/Geezer, etc.). All it makes me think is...I'm buying this DVD when it comes out. It's great, I love it when 80s bands play their old stuff. Like I was lucky enough to see the Somewhere Back in Time tour by Iron Maiden a few years ago. It's really awesome to hear that old stuff live.
