Mid-tier BB for IB (NY) vs. Top-tier BB for Global Markets (HK)

I'm currently deciding between an offer from a Mid-tier BB for IB in NY (think BAML/Citi/CS) and a Top-tier BB for Global Markets in HK (think GS/MS/JPM).

My eventual goal is to work in Asia, but would prefer working in IB.

Can somebody elaborate on the pros/cons of each and what you would do personally?

If I were in your shoes I would pick the Mid tier BB in NYC.

  • These banks usually have offices in all parts of the world so you can always transfer after a year or two. (Asia aspect of your goal)
  • Your long term goal is to work in IB and hence, this would set you up in the right track. Plus, having banking experience in a NYC BB is very well regarded all over the world and would make things easier moving forward. (IB aspect of your goal)
  • Give yourself the opportunity to explore a different city/lifestyle before moving to Asia. It’s great that you know exactly what you want but it would be a great person experience to have short-term exposure to a different cultures etc.

My two cents. Good luck with your decision
