Need advice please!
I am trying to get an internship relating to energy trading this summer. After getting no offers from several first and second round general S&T interviews with multiple places, I have managed to get in touch with people directly involved with the energy trading groups of 2 BB's. It seems as though they do their own hiring of interns rather than channeling them through the main recruiting process.
I heard from one last week and they seem pretty serious about bringing me onboard this summer, except now I just heard back from a guy at another place (who happens to be alum of my school). He too seems pretty serious about getting me placed for the summer and wants to talk further.
I have already been in serious talks with place 1 to the point I may get a difnitive offer shortly. At that point, it would be very awkward to turn it down since they are clearly going out of their way to talk with me (they actually already finished conducting their interviews last week). However, I also don't want to offend the other person who also seems very willing to help and quite honestly I'd like to see what he may be able to offer too.
So my question is: should I flat out decline the second offer to help or should I be honest with him, explain my situation with bank 1 and still see what he may have to offer? Of course I don't want to come off cocky or like I'm trying to compare offers...it's not even about the money, it's about which will get me the experience I'm looking for.
If I decline the second offer for help, would it be reasonable to recommend a fellow classmate/friend who is also searching for an internship and well qualified?
I'd like to come out of this with the most fitting offer without burning bridges. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Gut reaction is briefly explain the situation and go forward with both. You don't want to waste anyone's time, but you don't have an offer and until you do, you have to keep plugging. The last thing you want is to turn someone down, only to find that your first option doesn't pan out. Then you're fucked. Don't fuck yourself; pursue both.
i wouldn't tell either guy about the other firm until you get offer. often times you can have someone pulling hard for you and still not get an offer. i know of a few people from targets who have friends or relatives that are relatively high up (VP and up) in the bank that pull for them and still not get offers. i really dont see much upside if you tell the alums you are considering other banks before you get an offer. however, if they do ask if you are being considered by other banks, id be honest with them
