Networking referrals?

I know this isn't the first thread about this question, but I wanted to ask, say you just talked to an associate at goldman doing IBD in the real estate group.

first of all how do i approach trying to get him to pass my resume after our initial call? would it be rude if after our initial call i apply to the app and then just notify him about it? do i have to hint to him that i plan to do that?

second, when im applying to the general IBD app, would he be able to vouch for me at all? or would he only have pull if i was specifically applying to the real estate division. no idea? basically im asking if the banker could help you in any way if they're in an IBD group that you're not as interested in.

Also, should I be having 2nd or 3rd calls with people? what should I even be talking about in those 2nd or 3rd calls?

1) at the end of my networking calls, I would always say, “do you think i’d be able to put you down as a referral?”. This usually is also asking them to send your resume in on their half.

2) on the application & if they say yes, then click employee referral and enter their name/email if it asks

When I was applying to citi, there wasn’t an option to put someone’s name, but still clicked employee referral

oh wait i see what u mean now. this makes sense thank you. by asking them if i can put their name down as a referral in my app, they sort of take that as a signal to pass in my resume.

Asking to be put down for a referral on the initial call is a terrible idea. You should ask to "speak to others in the team" and be passed around internally while staying in touch with the original touch point. Then when recruiting actually comes around (interview time) you ask to put them down as a referral but if you did your job and are likable most likely they already internally pushed your resume.
