New blog

Hey guys,

I've been a longtime lurker on this site and have recently been inspired (with a lot of the thanks going to Patrick's own actions as well as Eddie and Midas' inspirational messages) to start my own blog.

As a quick background, I am a senior graduating in May and working at MBB next year. Since I have gotten my offer, senioritis has kicked in and I've decided to skip the majority of the few classes I'm taking anyway to get high and party with friends instead (or more likely recovering from partying the night before).

One thing I did in my spare time was to find an incredibly talented computer programmer and another friend (destined for the halls of MBB as well) to start our own business. It will be rolling out in a couple weeks, but the whole experience opened my eyes to how easy and enjoyable starting your own business really is.

Since my venture, I have become very interested in the world of entrepreneurship and have decided to chronicle my experiences around the space in a blog. I am a little worried about damaging relations with my firm so I have tried to keep the whole thing anonymous. Therefore, I have chosen to target young and old monkeys alike as my test subjects instead of any personal contact.

Please let me know any thoughts or suggestions you have about the blog!

Best,

Man at Work

@Midas- Thanks for all the support. I was thinking the same thing about Wordpress- I just wanted to make sure the blog wasn't a POS before I started nagging my programmer friend to help me again.

@Cartman- Great to hear man. I really do believe everything I write so if you're seriously considering branching off on your own idea, I'd love to hear all about it.

Dude, I hate to say it, but you probably do not want to be running a blog if you work for a major corporate entity- be it a consulting firm or an investment bank- until you have massive, massive job security. (Like being at least an MD/Partner). This is coming from first-hand experience.

is that why you shut down the blog u started a couple months back?

While I respect your argument and understand why you would back off, I think my situation's a little different. I have every intent of leaving my firm after about a year's work to go plunge headfirst into the real world and therefore would love to use the blog as a platform for bringing together startup enthusiasts, fellow entrepreneurs, and sharp-sighted financiers. Once I launch the independent website with some new content over the next couple days, I am hopeful that it will start to pick up some steam.

I work at MBB and it will be my goal to find out if you are working with us next year. Good luck with the blog!

"One day towards the end of my first semester as a senior, I was slowly getting stoned on the couch and dreaming of big tomorrows when I realized that there was no reason to wait."

You sound like the type of guy who would attract "sharp sighted financiers".

I really don't see why you sound so angry. I have nothing against the firm I will be working for next year, and I can honestly promise you that there is nowhere that I would rather work. However, the subject of my blog is about my desire to stop earning and start owning. I believe that my firm both supports entrepreneurial spirit and would welcome me for a year, watching me leave on good terms with my alum.

Finally, if you are shortsighted enough to believe that me smoking marijuana with my friends during my last semester of college is a good measure of my worth as a businessman and entrepreneur, then I truly do pity you. As someone who has also gone through the rigorous process of consulting interviews, I would have hoped that you realize the work ethic and determination required for them.

I do appreciate all of your opinions though and continue to welcome them!

I'm sorry, but you sound like an arrogant dolt.

"Destined for the halls of MBB" - that's a pretty audacious way to think/act.

"Starting a business is easy" - before you've made the first dollar.

"After 1 year I will gain enough experience and connections to be successful" - just start now if you're going to quit in 12 months.

and refering to yourself a hopeful future "Big Swinging Dick" - chill out man.

LESS TALK. MORE ACTION is needed on your part.

Whoa man, you need to chill out- no one's forcing you to read the blog and its meant to be an enjoyable read. Maybe its my fault for soliciting feedback without specifying I wanted useful and actionable feedback.

For those of you still interested in the blog, I've just gotten the new site up here: manatworkblog.com

Check back later tonight for another post and tell your friends about the site!

Best, M@W
