Non-Traditional Student
I am 27 and I want to go into finance. I am thinking of getting a MSF online with a certificate in project management. I have absolutely no experience (English major) and will be leaving another graduate program to enter into this one. I never really had to work so my work history is a little choppy, so this degree will be a career restart. I am wondering if this is a good path, not to go into banking or assets management but maybe corporate finance, project management or to be an actuary?
Dude where you wana go in the long run?
I would suggest you get a job. Any job. I don't think an online MSF is going to get you where you want, and you need to get some work experience under your belt.
I like to think of a degree online like a CFA . It may help with advancement, but it's really not going get you a job. There will be no OCR & the degree will likely carry less weight than a degree from a non-target.
A job in finance will be great, that is the plan to get work experience. The only reason I will continue the degree online is if I had to relocate for a position. My end goal is actuary, and I believed with passing two or three test before graduation, getting an internship and/or some type of work experience under my belt I would be fine for that field.
You were an English major and haven't done anything academic since school (as far as I can tell) and you want to be an actuary? You have a looooooong road ahead of you.
Don't do any online degree unless you're already established with a company and they think it is a good idea.
Shouldn't you be occupying something?
What do you mean? Should I have a job in the financial field? Has no one ever switched careers into finance?
You've never worked before and hop from one degree to the next. I am going to assume that your parents are rich. If so, look at Indiana Universities MSF online.
Don't expect a job though, maybe you could land something BO, but I would be hesitant to hire someone with a papyrus scroll of degrees and no real experience.
During the MSF I would want to get an internship and at least two to three exams passed. Would that not count for anything within the field?
