Opinions on IMC Trading

I have an offer from IMC Trading, and I'm trying to figure out if I should take it. I'd be working as a software engineer, not a trader. In general, I think I'm too risk averse to work as a trader, but I still think finance is very interesting. My other offer is at Microsoft/Amazon/Google, so more general software engineering. One thing I'll note is that IMC's base salary is a bit higher than the salary + stock grant at the tech firm, and I know the bonus will also be pretty good at IMC.

Does anyone have any perspective/advice on making a decision? As a new grad, I'm particularly interested in the long term prospects/effects of my decision.

IMC is among the leader in High Frequency Trading. They really work on the bleeding edge of tech application in finance. Compared to the tech firms that you've mentioned they have far smaller team.

But ultimately it depends on what you want to do. IF you love being an engineer and want to work in Computer Science go to Google/Amazon. On the other hand if you're interested in markets their micro structure and the likes and how you can use tech on markets go to IMC.

All I'll say is don't make a decision based on compensation. If you like where you're at and what you're doing the money will follow.

Hi, my brother is interested in IMC Financial as well. He's interviewed at a few reputable Chicago firms and has liked what IMC has to offer (in terms of culture, training, etc.). Is the salary offer for software engineers top-notch competitive? $130,000 base + a large bonus seems like a great first-year offer! Is this normal for most software engineers?

As a trader's perspective, IMC is one of the top option firms and prob the best on pure HFT in terms of infrastructure and latency.

Said, you will learn a lot there. However, this doesn't lead that u will get paid there well (def better than tech firms but I heard IMC is pretty top heavy), make a big impact (all of the infrastructure is already set up), or learn about vol strategies compared to SIG or Optiver.

I will say it's up to you to balance the short term & long term goal, compensation, and culture. But for sure it's a leading firm in the industry.

Thanks for the response. Could you comment on the job stability as a dev at a place like IMC - are they quick to fire people? How often are people let go? Tech seems like its a very safe choice, and was wondering how IMC would compare.
