Pass/Fail and GPA.

Hi,

I am currently an incoming sophomore at a non target. (Good alumni base).

I am working this summer at a small boutique bank, and plan on recruiting for sophomore IB jobs in the fall.

I currently have a 4.0 GPA, but was informed I received 2 A- this semester, one in accounting, and one in Spanish.

I can take these as P/F as well. Which should I do? Taking both as a pass would mantain the 4.0 into my sophomore year, and taking the A- would have my GPA at a 3.93. Any advice would be appreciated.

In My Opinion, a 3.93 is not really disqualifying yourself and frankly makes you look more human. There are so many other factors that go into IB other than just GPA that no matter what you do it probably doesn't matter at the end of the day. Granted taking advantage of the opportunity your school is providing to keep your 4.0 is probably the best move.

Thanks for your reply!

I'm not nervous for GPA in terms of IB, but more so in terms of grad school.

Would 2 Pass/Fails during this pandemic really give a top MBA program reason to reject me?

No, even in a normal situation taking 2 major classes P/F (or having 2 Ws which is worse) is worth noting but not a reason for rejection.

Medical schools are way more serious about P/F than MBAs and even they have said they'll be less harsh about this semester

Keeping that 4.0 will be more beneficial in the short-term and long-term. Maybe med school/law school would care about transcripts, but doesn't really matter as much for finance/MBA. Especially during this time, MBAs shouldn't care.

It'll look weird if you have only 2 P/F classes on your whole transcript, especially for that semester IMO; it would look like you're GPA protecting. I'd either P/F the whole semester or take the 3.93, but personally, I'd P/F the whole thing and blame it on stress from COVID. A 4.0 is extremely impressive and it's easier to explain a whole semester of P/F than 1-2 grades.

On the flip side, if you screw up later, it'll impact your GPA more severely because you'll have less A and A- grades to average it out, so be very careful moving forward and you'll be fine.
