Pay For Hire??

Is it legal to pay someone to refer you for a position, or help you land a job? I remember a while back some kid posted that he'd give his signing bonus to anyone who got him an IB offer and everyone was like wow dude you got balls and people seemed really impressed that he'd be willing to do that, but I bet a ton of people would give up a few thousand to get a an IB job. Especially in this market. It seems like a win win situation, but is that even legal?

There's no law against it as far as I know, but that has serious moral implications which would undoubtedly be cause enough for a pink slip for either party.

Depends on company policy. Many, many companies actually give cash rewards to their employees for recommending someone who ultimately gets hired ($500 - $1,500). However, by switching the relationship from company-employee to employee-prospective employee, things change a little bit. I'd say that it is probably okay if the person is interviewed / granted a job offer by someone OTHER than you. If you go ahead and hire a subordinate who then gives you a % of his paycheck, that's a problem.

Oh -- I shoulda added: Either way your company will not like it. While they will be gaining a new employee that they feel is qualified and worthy of the position, they probably won't agree that you're entitled to a portion of that person's salary/bonus.
