PE at IFC
Hi,
I have searched in the forum and nothing much about this topic.
Does anyone know anything about Associate Investment Officer for PE at IFC (International Finance Corporation - World Bank Group)? I've got an interview coming up and just want to know what I'd be expecting. Would the interview be the same as other PE shops?
It'd be great if someone has gone this path and can share their experience.
Thanks.
Somebody's getting places.
No, it wouldn't. IFC is part of a politically driven organization.
Poke around the website and you'll find it to be a FoF.

A lot of the time when a large corp or organization says "private equity" they're talking about investing in PE, which means a fund of funds where you're mostly updating quarterly reports and tracking how well a fund is doing.
Makes sense because very few organizations have the time and knowledge required to buy and run entire companies on their own. Especially if the role is called "investment officer" because there's no such thing as an "officer" in a traditional LBO shop.
gNorm, I have a similar interview on Monday. Could you tell me what to expect?
He's likely interviewing for the same job you're interviewing for, why would he tell you what to expect?
IFC does some very interesting PE work around the world. I worked with them in Africa - they invested in some of our funds - and learned that they invest in funds, funds-of-funds, and make direct investments in company equity. Advice for your interview - or for any future ones - is to be fluent in corporate finance and conversational in fund structure, GP-LP relationships, and what you would take into account if you were going to invest in a country (depending on the geographical focus of the position) like Senegal or Turkey or Indonesia, and the answer extends beyond corporate finance to corp governance, management quality and vision, potential for the company to become a regional leader, and macro considerations like inflation, capital controls, and FX risk.
IFC is mainly looking for Economists-they have a three-year rotational program. They co-invest along with local peers and EIB or EBRD in emerging markets.
