phone interview. Is it a negative sign?

Had a phone interview with a member of team and it was a very quick conversation that lasted 15 minutes about my background. He sounded very neutral, so it's very hard to tell if he's interested in me or not. In the end, he told me that the interview process is still ongoing and didn't mention when I will be expected to hear back. Just say thank you for your time and then we ended the conversation. Is it a ding basically?

If it was your first phone interview with the firm then it was most likely just an intro call to learn more about yourself and see if you could potentially be a good fit.

If it was not the first call, probably a bad sign.

I explained why I want to work there, why their department, am I currently interviewing with other companies? Any questions for him? etc. He is the most senior person in the team, I assume he could be busy. It was a pure fit interview. He didn't smile or seem annoyed, hard to tell if he liked my answers. In the end, he didn't give me any information about the next step, that seems a bad sign to me.
