Recent Engineering Grad looking to transition

I am a recent graduate of an ivy institution with a not so stellar gpa (3.0). I am looking to somehow transition my way into the financial sector but things are looking gloom.

My background consists of only academia (years of lab experience) and a single first author publication.
I have been cold emailing people at small boutique firms (mostly for banking) and have yet to elicit a single response.

Should I change my strategy? I was told by a former consultant a way to break in can be as a research analyst.
Any tips/help is appreciated!
