References before Coffee Interview?
Hey all
Reached out to a Director at a boutique today through email, alumni and he replied pretty much straight away. Didn't attach my resume, my email was something to the effect of:
"Hi X, I'm studying X and Y at X university. I recently interned at blah blah blah. I understand that you're very busy, but I'd love the opportunity to talk about the industry and your career over a coffee sometime. I've been doing lots of networking along the street and have met with bankers from X, Y and Z as I want to base myself here once I graduate" (Note: I do not live in a NY / LA / SF financial hub).
He replied almost immediately asking when I am expected to graduate and asking if I were okay with him reaching out to the VP which I worked under in my previous internship. I of course said it was fine and shortly after we arranged to meet which will happen in about two weeks.
Why did he ask for my expected graduation? Why would he want to speak to my previous internship manager? People around me think it's because perhaps he'd be interested in hiring me, given the meet goes well etc.. as they don't have a structured student internship / graduate program - but that seems too easy to be true. Perhaps he wanted to reach out to the VP for a character reference? See if I was worth his time perhaps?
What does WSO think? Is this standard procedure for seeing if a student is worth your time? Is it more so the "we're expanding our team and this proactive student could be the next hire"? Not sure what to make of it.
Will SB any meaningful replies, thanks.
Hey Peter Sullivan, I think you deserve a response...heck, everyone does. We're listening, sorry about the delay ...my best guess at places on WSO that could help:
If we're lucky, maybe I can guilt some users to help you out: Zamoner EuRates @Csavage12"
You're welcome.
Thx for suggestion monkey. Will wait for post to circulate.
Rgds, Peter
You're way overthinking this, imo. It's a positive that you received a quick response, and it's a positive that you were able to set up a meeting. Just think positively, be yourself, and express your interest in the industry and their firm (if you're interested in working there). Spending your energy hypothesizing about the exact motives of the banker(s) will get you nowhere, and it might actually trip you up in the meeting if you dwell on it.
Agreed, I tend to fixate on things which I know I may not get an answer for. Just need to remain grounded and go in and convey my passion.
It's hard to speculate what exactly the Director might want from talking to your VP. Perhaps he does want a character reference like you said. Ultimately though, given that your VP likes you, this will just make it easier for you to establish a better relationship with the Director and possibly get an interview. Before the call, the Director will already have a great impression after talking with the VP and you just need to confirm that in order for him to actually like you and get you an interview. You should start preparing for the call.
Thanks Entrepreneur Hero but it's a proper coffee not a phone call.
WallStreetOasis.com I thought interns can't get certified?
Anyways, it's not particularly standard (never had a coffee meeting where I was asked beforehand to give a reference), but not sure why that should matter. It would make sense that if he liked your background he's potentially considering bringing you on full time, but you also didn't mention your graduating year to us, so I can't really speculate on that
Thanks for heads up - checking why our team certified him.

Patrick, why did I get certified?
Curious because it's not something I ever sought after or requested. Is certification awarded to users who contribute in a meaningful manner / don't troll? Looks like I just lost said certification so all is well in the end..
Howard Hughes that does make sense. I've done a fair bit of networking with different senior players at this firm so perhaps he has heard my name being floated around and admires my tenacity. Everybody I've spoken to think it's a good sign that he wanted to talk to my previous staffer - shows at least some interest in me. Not sure who threw MS at you, certainly wasn't me.
