How Much Coffee is Good for You?
Hey monkeys,
I'm sure many of you here drink coffee to get yourself energized and ready for the day. Here's some good news for you : Drinking Coffee May Lower Risk Of Early Death, According To New Study
A new study is adding to the good news about coffee, finding that drinking two to four cups a day is associated with overall lower risk of death, particularly among middle-age drinkers. This study adds to previous research finding promising connections between coffee consumption and improved health.
Personally speaking, I find that coffee instead lowers my productivity; some of the symptoms that I start to feel include headaches and nausea (weird, I know), although, after quite some time, the effects become more subtle.
What about you monkeys? Is coffee an integral part of your lives? If yes, how much do you drink in a day?
All of it.
1 cup in the morning and 1 cup at lunch is usually the perfect amount for me!
I drink caffeinated teas mostly and sometimes coffee. Take a few weeks off of caffeine regularly to maintain tolerance. Coffee is the #1 source of antioxidants in the U.S. diet. That's more a testament to how bad the typical American eats than to the antioxidant content of coffee.
just keep in mind a lot of those studies exclude the use of cream and sugar
I've read mixed studies how drinking too much coffee is problematic and others like the above reference where it is healthy. I just drink coffee on an as needed basis to keep me churning. I typically have one cup in the morning and a second cup around 4-5pm.
Coffee is key to being a raging BSD bull. I use it for hours of consistent productivity and before hitting the gym. The reason you feel like shit is because you're not drinking enough water. Can you tell I'm on it right now?
But, seriously, the pitfall is that it makes you slightly incontinent and very dehydrated. You definitely want to drink a lot of water throughout the day if you're having multiple cups a day. The thing to keep in mind is that it's not a major source of energy. It's a stimulant. So there are links to coffee increasing your brain's power, but it's not something that will keep you going. You'll crash hard if you're eating a healthy balanced diet and not getting enough water.
It really depends. If you were Balzac, then maybe you would want to drink 30,000 cups of coffee
1 cup when i get in unless i had time to have one at home, then one at 11am or 12pm. Anytime after 1pm and I'm all iced green or black tea. No sugar....in any of it.
The caffeine in coffee is a vaso-constrictor. While you may live longer, your face will age faster (reduced blood flow to small capillaries). Plus, it affects sleep patterns. Unless you metabolize caffeine very quickly, you won't get good REM sleep. There's also the issue of dehydration. However, that can be mitigated with quality hydration (lemon water especially).
Pro-tip: If you get the jitters drinking coffee, add some green tea to your hydration routine. It's a increases blood flow and has a calming affect. Yes caffeine from coffee and tea are molecularity different. I'm 2x a week (on days I lift heavy). Tea 3x week. 2 days off on weekends (unless I get drunk, then coffee and heavy cream in the next AM).
almost all the Colombian women in my family drink like 6 plus cups a day and they look 10 years younger than what they are, and they also live to 90+.
I have this theory that colombian women are superheroes. seriously, how can all of them look perfect and live forever?
Yeah, Colombian women don't count. Shakira and Sophia Vergara are 7's out there. It's a very special place ;)
I don't drink coffee or energy drinks, I wake up in the morning ready to seize the day, don't need substances to motivate.
money is the motivation dawg
That's word to mother
Sack up and crack open a cold one you pussies.
Agreed. Starbucks doubleshots ice cold are a good quick fix.
Double shot over ice is actually the call when it's not cold out. Quick jolt, tastes great, doesn't burn your mouth.
If you have a fast metabolism the positive effects of coffee outweigh the negatives, if you have a slow metabolism vice versa. Research recently has shown that there is no blanket healthy or unhealthy answer because it is so dependent on genetics. I am a fast metabolizer and have 1-2 cups a day, although if my second cup is too late in afternoon it adversely affects my ability to fall asleep (But always have it without sugar)
4 cups a day is considered the healthy max (400mg of caffeine by FDA standards)
One of the problems with caffeine consumption is that 1 Venti at Starbucks has around 450mg of caffeine in it, which is the equivalent of 4.5 cups of coffee.
Portion control is everything, and America doesn't know portion control.
That is actually very, very true.
More interesting - when do you guys stop drinking coffee throughout the day?
3-4pm, or sleep becomes quite elusive.
I used to stop at around 5pm, wasn't ideal. I've found it needs to be 2-3pm so that it actually wears off.
When I no longer need to work. I don't have the luxury of stopping at some arbitrary point. If it's 12:30am and I've just gotten a heavily edited pitch book back to have in my 8, you bet I'm chugging red bulls. Probably a big reason I can't sleep half the time even if I do have the time.
If I can control when I stop then I usually try to have my last cup around 4 and I should be good to sleep by 12/1. Usually have my morning coffee, my double shots over ice with lunch to kill the post-lunch slump and aid digestion, another coffee around 3/4.
Wow I guess I am more of an outlier than I thought.
I drink 5-6 cups/day and that's much lower than what I consume when studying for the CFA.
I'm right here with you, I think you and I both have a big tolerance.
I've never had a cup in my life, stuff tastes like shit
How Many Cups of Coffee Do You Survive On Daily? (Originally Posted: 11/09/2016)
We all need our daily caffeine fix, however, some of us consume more coffee than the others and I was wondering what is your go to amount to keep you vibrant and bustling through the day.
Was reading this article on how many cups of coffee a day is ideal before it becomes over excessive. The general consensus is 4- 5 cups a day is ideal and could actually help you to live longer.
For me, I normally take in just a cup of cappuccino in the morning just to wake myself up before I head for lectures and prolly one more in the noon to keep away the lunch food coma.
How about you? And choice of coffee? Regular black? Expresso? Or a Latte?
usually 1, max 2, nothing after 2pm
speaking of... 30min til last call...
A man needs principals
This is good for me. Usually 2-3 in the am and 1-2 in the late afternoon.
I limit myself to one cup every other day. I love coffee but don't want to grow dependent on it and suffer withdrawal symptoms if I don't have it.
yeah .. and I hear it is the gateway drug to crystal meth. I have seen too much breaking bad to let that happen to me
weaklings....clearly don't have kids.
usually have 2 before leaving the house...grab a Starbucks/dunkies on the way to the office, and will refill once/twice during the morning depending on how well the kid slept.
then a decaf in the afternoon for placebo effect...
apparently i won't be dying anytime soon.
depends on other sources of caffeine for the day ... I think I have between 250 and 500 mg of caffeine a day
generally: pre workout 6am ~300mg double shot of espresso 2pm ~150mg
big pre workout fan
Used to have 6-10 cups of coffee per day. Now down to maybe 2 or 3 - maybe a fourth on a slow day in the afternoon.
Was once up to 8 double espresso a day, didn't really have any effect anymore. Now, usually 1-2 double espresso a day.
Three cups coffee throughout the day. I also take 400mg of caffeine as part of my pre-workout.
Varies from 2 to 5 a day. I fill in the gaps with green tea. Green tea is a much better caffeine stimulation for me.
Primarily drinking flate white. I try to save the expresso for the days where I really need to express myself on those prensentations.
Does Irish coffee count?
2
I'll be the stereotypical addict - I probably have the equivalent of 5-10 cups of coffee erryday. Seriously doubt this will be what kills me though (super credible source: both parents drink coffee/soda like water and they're in perfect cardiovascular health).
Gateway drug... yeah for sissies. Nobody is forcing people to be dependent on coffee.
I have 4 cups every day. 8AM, 10AM, 12PM, and 2PM. I'm on a roll after that 2nd cup hits.
There is scientific time when to drink coffee. Scientist figured it out when do we, humans/monkeys, release cortisol (a hormone that keeps us awake and alert). At the time of releasing some cortisol, we should not drink coffee. “By consuming caffeine when it is not needed, your body will build a faster tolerance to it, and the buzz you get will greatly diminish.” Please refer to the graph below for your reference Me, I usually don't give a f**k. I drink when i want. No rules.
been doing this. Guess it's ok, it's just coffee
Who sleeps from 9PM to 6AM?
Thug life. gangsta gangsta
caffeine pills and around 2-3 per day however, I'm starting to like tea more and more.
What tea do you drink? Yerba mate?
I'll do most kinds..Slammed the keurig last summer with multiple cups of Bigelow Green Tea though.
0, never got into drinking coffee but I drink anywhere from 2-4 cups of green tea each day during the week
maximum 2 and sometimes 3
I've been cycling for a few years and think it works great for me: 6 weeks on / 2 weeks off. That way the adenosine receptors decrease in number and you feel the boost again afterwards.
You cycle drinking coffee or taking caffeine pills?
one cold brew in the morning, one iced coffee after lunch, and one iced coffee after dinner as I start in for the night
I don't drink coffee (regularly - may have some leisurely) and I won't start. Last thing I want is to be dependent on it to get up in the morning like most of corporate America.
For people who don't drink coffee and want to be depend on it, try Red Bull.
every day take 2-3 servings preworkout before gym. This keeps me mentally sharp for good 2 hrs after gym and into work. Will drink 3-4 cups during work. also got guanara extract supp i mix w vitamin b complex when not in mood for coffee and want to get it down quick.
What preworkout do you take? I assume You're referring to a booster? DHMA included?
Try Hunter Thompson's routine..

Maybe not so relevant as I drink tea but anyway, I drink between 3 to 4 cups of strong tea a day.
What kind?
Ever since I went to Italy, nothing is the same. I crave the little Cafe espresso's we had there while on vacation.
I feel your pain bro
Have to admit that they do the best expressos, while melbourne has the best lattes
I didn't need coffee this summer at my IB SA position........I merely just survived off of the adrenaline from the constant fear that I messed up something in a pitch book for my MD
Still wanting to take that FT offer after having to live in fear all summer?
Zero. I am a Diet Coke fiend though.
not much three cups are fine for me for a day
one in the morning, most times a second during the day and if it's a really bad day some guarana (it helps over a longer time period than just coffee).
About 2/3 cups per day. Lavazza is the best one, everyone needs a fuc**d cup of Lavazza per day
1 cup at 10:30am exactly. All about that circadian rhythm or whatever.
I made my wife, a self-proclaimed coffee addict, decaf for 3 weeks as an experiment. She didn't notice. Bitch was running around all chipper like a fool.
...and I though you couldn't impress me further! ROFL
Did you ever end up telling her it was decaf? That is awesome though
