Renege Offer?

I signed a summer offer with the first bank and unfortuately it was an exploding offer, so I accepted it before attending any other superdays. I rejected some other opportunities after that but then got fast tracked into a SD for a lower tier BB and received an offer, but not sure if I should renege.

The first bank I accepted the offer is well known in the foreign HQ country but not as much in the US. I've built a relationship with some people working there (alums like analysts and MD) months ago back in Feb/March (campus visits, coffee chats and emails) and now I feel like I shouldn't go back on my word.

I am also logically thinking about long term gains, and feel like I have a better chance of a return for FT at the first bank but who knows.

Please advise if you can! Thank you!

Thank you! I have asked other peers and they all say to take it, but I don't think they understand that I have more relationships at the first firm than the offer...

If I do, how do I word it to HR? I wrote to my interviewers about how I'm excited and they've repsponded positively as well. Obviously I can't go back to the first firm ever in the future but how do I successful renege?

I think it’s early enough in the recruiting timelines for most banks that it won’t be terrible if you renege the offer. If you were doing this in March, that would look much worse. I would probably email them directly, especially whoever your recruiter / POC was to let them know. Throw in something about how tough of a decision it was for you, just be sincere in general.
