Reneging on an Internship Offer

Hi all. I'm not in this place yet but am wondering. If I were to already have accepted an offer from a bank's capital markets program but had an offer from a different bank's investment banking program, is reneging something I should consider?

I hear stories of people who have had problems with offers getting revoked and things like that and I want to make sure I avoid that. But if the jump is worth making, I'd love some thoughts on how to best navigate that process. For reference, it would be to a GS/MS/JPM-type investment banking program.

Yes, you can renege, but I wouldn't make any public posts about the next internship until you start the new internship. (no updating LinkedIn)

Call your HR recruiter as soon as possible to say, "thank you for taking the time to interview and select me as a candidate, but unfortunately, due to personal circumstances, I have decided not to take part __'s summer internship program." if you can't call, send an email. Try not to make it overly personal and realize that many things happen, and companies plan for such things. You won't be the first nor last intern that they have had to replace.

Sooner rather than later is a kind thing to do, though.

Just renege and don't update your LinkedIn two seconds later to a different bank. You just renege and don't update your LinkedIn until you start. You shouldn't be one of those "Incoming SA" types anyway.

Renege, just don't give the bank any hint regarding your new place.

Shoot HR an email that you wont join them for the summer and you have decided to go another direction with your career. Then ghost that firm entirely.

Firms always have monkeys on their wait lists to fill their intern class.

Once you start your M&A gig, you can update your linkedin.

100% renege. Just say personal reasons. Don't tell them you're going to a different bank. Don't tell them you're going into investment banking. Don't update your LinkedIn until you actually start your internship.
