Resources to learn about the tech industry?
Looking to join a tech coverage group as an associate. What resources should I use to get up to date on everything that is going on?
Any specific equity research publishings or articles to look at?
Should I focus on a specific sector within tech like fintech or education because tech is so large or would a general understanding be enough?
How much am I expected to know?
Thanks
My background is in Energy, but I want to demonstrate enough knowledge that they will ignore my Energy background
Techcrunch, Hacker News, Slashdot
Tech crunch is probably best for a finance perspective. Hacker News can be useful or it can be full of snobs wanting to seem cool by using obscure tech. A lot of people also write Medium articles that have great info. MIT tech review is cool and useful.
While TechCrunch is the most comprehensive - Alex Wilhelm could use a brief stint as a investment banking analyst covering tech. Its disgusting watching a journalist try to write about finance. Its just not good analysis. At the same time I pay up to subscribe to ExtraCrunch as so long as you overlook the financial analysis it is good coverage and has good product discussion.
i would pick one subsector, having multiple is great but few ppl in tech focus on more than one
education is a specific subsegment of digital media but if you genuinely care then you should go for it
it all depends on your definition of tech, if you're risk averse i would say software, if you like listening to techcrunch then software and media, if you're into hardware then semis. just pick one
and dont forget to pinroll your jeans
Stratechery, follow a bunch of tech people on twitter, S1 break downs from Meritech
