Role in RE Private Equity after Masters

I am a senior (nontarget, 3.5 gpa) and fortunate enough to currently be interning at a real estate development firm in New York with the hope of breaking into REPE. I am going to start my application to NYU's or Georgetown's Masters in Real Estate program for next year.

May someone please provide insight on the kind of role (Analyst or Associate) a MSRE graduate usually takes upon completion of the program. Also, is it recommended that I work for a few years before going for the MSRE and attempting to break into REPE?

Any comments or tips would be greatly appreciated!

I am a MSRE student. Upon completion of the program, if you dont have lots of work experience (less than 2-3 yrs work exp), you typically have a good shot at similar roles to that of a college graduating senior. You will be competing with college seniors for the top jobs- analyst roles in Blackstone, Morgan Stanley, etc. I am competing with college juniors right now for a 2018 summer internship. The masters is not the be all and end all that will get you a job, probably an interview and then it will be upto you to take it from there. The opportunity to network is stellar though and I definitely see many doors being opened. My advice will be to find a full time job, even if its entry level, then go to school in the evening, do like 2-3 classes a semester. Then try your best to land a summer internship and hope that turns into a full time job. On your question about working a few more years, thats tough one as its subjective. It is possible that you might be able to break into REPE without a masters and then you just saved yourself a bunch of money, but its not a guarantee, people have definitely done it, and people who felt like they did not have a shot at REPE at all, certainly graduated from a masters program and were able to break into REPE out of the program. So, maybe give it a year or two, network and see if your able to break into REPE? You can also then go to school, no need to rush.

Thanks for the great advice.

One of my worries was the idea having a huge amount of debt and seeking roles that I could have gotten straight out of undergrad.

Perhaps the best strategy to ensure that I am competing for "experienced" or associate roles as a graduate from a MSRE program is to do both -- have a relevant full-time job and network my ass off while taking a few evening classes. However, I do understand that obtaining REPE roles is competitive and that I'll have to take a step back in order to take 2 steps forward.
