Secondary mortgage market - typical "trader" salary and opportunities?

I am a desk analyst with a major (non BB) originator (3yrs out of undergrad - two of which were corp finance, 1 year in current position) and at a cross-roads of sorts: I have an upcoming promotion to a "trader" position (essentially pooling and selling loans into the MBS market and hedging the pipeline) but I am not sure what my compensation will be or what the broader market typically pays. I am also curious about subsequent exit opportunities this experience could provide. It's a relatively niche area of mortgage banking so there isn't a lot of info out there. Can anyone that has experience in this area of the industry fill me in? Im not super enthusiastic about corporate mortgage banking and highly motivated to break into buy side asset mgmt - could this experience open any doors? Thanks!
