Self Introuction and Finance Career Interests
Hi Everyone,
I am currently an undergraduate student at a State school, but am heavily involved on campus and have a high GPA. I'm planning to major in Finance, but am unsure about what parts in Finance interest me.
Thus, I was wondering for all the professionals or students in the early, middle, or late stages of their career:
- What is your current position/field within the Finance industry?
- What do you like about this position/field, or why did you choose it?
- How is your work-life balance?
- What fascinates you about Finance?
It would be my honor to have such professionals and others in this community share their thoughts and experiences. I value everyone's insight, and am hoping that I can use this feedback to take a next step in my career.
Early stage professional here, only 2 years into my career. Started off in a general accounting type role in a F250, networked into an FP&A role, and then used that to lateral to another company (FTSE100, still in the US) doing operations finance. I now sit at more of a divisional level, where the "in the weeds" financial analysis is done at the site level, and then consolidate everything into a need to know level for VP of Ops/Directors.
I like my position because I am basically the "number guy/financial eyes and ears" for the operations team, and the chance to interact with executives. In my opinion, finance / having an eye to the financials of a company is one of the most important skill sets to have to be successful in business.
Work life is very solid, 9-5, with some occasional 9-6/7 days around month end, but these are the exception, not the norm.
What fascinates me about finance was touched on above, but to me, it's the quantitative view of business. If you work on building soft skills, there's no limit to what you can achieve.
Thank you - that is really insightful! Also, you mentioned you started in a general accounting role - did you pursue an accounting agree for your undergrad? Also, would you say that you there is a lot of room for career growth in your position?
