Settling a retarded "prestige" issue bet
Magna cum Laude vs. Summa cum Laude: does it matter? both check the box, right? so an applicant with one has 0 advantage from this over another, if they are from the same target?
Not to sound defensive but Magna > Summa in the sense that the person was not a total grade whore.
So I take it you got magna and your friend got summa and you want us to re-inflate your ego by saying you did a better job by going out more nights than he did and not working as hard?
Can't help you there, but I will say applying to graduate schools summa v magna makes a difference and applying to jobs it makes a marginal difference, its binary like you alluded to in your post, but by no means is some recruiter gonna say "Oh what a chill dude he was only magna meaning he balances the perfect amount of chill ballerness and work ethic, natty lights and Incubus for everyone."
Exactly. Get over it, he's better than you. He's likely got a larger schlong as well
it makes a difference
It certainly makes a difference. It shows the level of effort and diligence one has in undergrad. Does this necessarily mean that one will perform better in the work setting? No. But summa's certainly get attention from HF's and PE firms, as well as grad schools.
I don't think it makes a difference what so ever. I screened resumes for my bank. In the 30 seconds or so spent reviewing a resume before putting them in the yes or no pile, you glance at the gpa and mentally check yes or no. I never differentiated between and level. Its binary. One you are in the interview stage gpa doesn't matter at all. Fit and interview performance are what dictate who gets the job.
Everything makes a difference.
summa cock O-------------------------------------\ ................... O-------------------------------------/
magna cock 8->
I've seen schools that had only cum laude. No magna, no summa. Fair? And I'm sure that at some lesser schools, summa cum laude is a meaningless embellishment. It's all about who the competition was.
I don't know if it makes any difference, but summa is unquestionably more prestigious than magna.
Take it from someone who graduated "summa cum stain" from undergrad.
I don't know why you are being defensive about it. That is like saying the guy who goes to ASU is better than the guy who goes to Wharton because he has a life and doesn't live in the library
I think the better question the OP should ask himself is why the hell does he care. Sounds like deep seeded inferiority complex to me.
I just got inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. I'm worried this might make me look like a nerd. Should I leave this off my resume?
