Should I give up on moving to IB front office?
I graduated from University (UK) with a Law degree about two years ago. Since then I have worked for one of the big 4 and currently, work for a BB asset manager. I have been trying to move over to the IB world because I am sick of being pigeonholed into legal type roles. First of all,I am not a lawyer;I have an LLB.
I find the slow pace of the AM uninteresting; though I am very grateful for the experience. I recently applied for a few programs at MS and JP. I was rejected for everything at MS and got a rejection email from the SA branch of JPM CIB. Does this mean I shouldn't bother?
I have been trying to break in for about a year now from a position less relevant to IB than yours. You should be able to network effectively with a BB and Big 4 on your resume. Try to start cold calling, emailing and reaching to anyone in your network that you think would be able to help. Keep grinding and something will eventually happen (hopefully).
I am in the UK. Not sure if Cold calling is a thing here but I will give it a shot.
Just network internally, some firms have forced internal mobility programs after 2/3/4 years.
Not many networking opportunities but I’ll do my best.
Networking works everywhere, never give up. You just need to find the right angle to transition into IB
You literally just stated two of the best IB's have you tried other places? If you are only going to try and apply for the likes of GS/MS/JPM then yea you probably should give up and focus elsewhere. If you really want to break in you will most likely have to go to less prestigious place work hard gain experience and then lateral over to the big BB if that is what you desire.
Go get an MBA, then come in as an associate. Really the only way if I'm being honest.
Apply for S&T. That will give you all the fast-paced action you can get, plus way than more than that.
I have tried that at a few of the BB but no luck, Will keep trying
Try it not only at BB's but at any size firm, the size of the firm doesn't matter, as you know, it's the experience. Even local shops are a good f you can't get anything else. Don't rule out any options.
Network harder, and stop feeling sorry for yourself (if you are feeling this way). It will work out for the better.
Word. Take this advice.
