Anyone read the book in the title of this post?
Had it recommended to me by a couple guys I used to work with in Houston that are in the oil trading space and was curious to hear if it had made it out of those circles yet. Just ordered it on Amazon, looking forward to reading it. Amazon reviews look promising as well but who knows if those are legit or his friends trying to help him out.
I ordered it. Read the first page and will pick it back up but I have the worry we're going to feel like attorneys reading The Pelican Brief.
First half was good ending sucked balls
That isn't what I wanted to hear. Oh well, seems like a short and easy read.
Was given it as a Secret Santa gift by a colleague this past Christmas. Agree with @nattyphizz - the first 2/3rds or so are quite good fun, and then it goes completely downhill. It's written by a former energy and metals trader, so the more technical content (not that it's at all ever heavy-going) is all correct and proper. Would give it a read for the S&Gs, but would recommend the classics (e.g. Liar's Poker) ahead if you haven't read them yet!
Nice write up. Should be by the time I get back from skiing this weekend so I guess it will be my weekday read. Unfortantely, already read all of the classics such as Liar’s Poker, King of Oil, etc.
Thanks heaps for giving my beloved Slippery a look! Much appreciated. I don't think the ending is that bad...hahaha! But can well understand people's misgivings, all good. Nothing's perfect, only slippery. Looking back, I guess I was trying to weave too many genres together. But if you like the idea of Liar's Poker morhping into The Bourne Ultimatum, then I reckon you'll find Slippery a nice escape from the usual dross we're served up. I was close to having a massive Hollywood baller wanting to star in a film adaptation but he got a little tied up in the #MeToo shenanigans and that all fell through. Ah well. Just finished the book, while I'm sure the book is at least slightly exaggerated, Trafigura's culture truly is horrid (assuming it is Trafi from the deals desk reference)
I assumed it was Trafi as well. Definitely a unique culture that isn't for everyone. The people that are there and enjoy it though would probably say the typical corporate culture is shit.
I interviewed at Trafigura some time ago and they explicitly mentioned that "we don't hire assholes", how ironic...probably the highest concentration of dickheads in Trafigura out of any the major physical shops. Book captures it pretty well.
Just finished the book a couple days ago, can definitely confirm most of what Liam was saying, even if it was exaggerated at times haha.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Trafi culture. Take my view with a grain of salt because I come from a place where you have to fight to get things done, otherwise you'll get run over by everyone, so the independence and bluntness was familiar.
Though caveat is that I agree it's not a great place for grads. Like definitely take it if you have nothing better, but it's up to you to sink or swim versus other places where they'll give you more rope to deal with.
He was still listing Trafi as his employer during that time period on his LinkedIn last time I checked, so solid guess!
