Social Life Outside of Work

Monkeys,

I recently moved to a new corporate development/strategy gig in North Jersey from a southern city. So far I am liking it due to much improved work life balance compared to my old IB role. However, I am missing a bit team morale since I don't have any peers. I also don't sit with anyone since the senior guys are mostly traveling or WFH. It would honestly be better if I am in NYC but won't complain since my cost of living is much lower and I can easily access the city via ferry.

I am trying to get to know more people and expand my social/professional life and wonder if you guys have any advice? Also, I am looking to hit more tennis since I have more free time now and please feel free to DM me if you are around the same area. Thanks guys!

Rec sports leagues have always been a good one for me. You'll meet people who have similar interests by default since you'll be playing the same sport - tennis it looks like in your case.

Industry organizations have been useful for friend finding for me as well.

Meetup.com is cool. When I was new to NYC I did a bunch of different events. You meet interesting folks, new transplants, and 'interesting' folks. It was a lot of fun and sure beat watching Beavis and Butthead reruns on the weekends.

Internations is a good site to meet people. Otherwise go salsa dancing, friendly environment, plenty of women and fun

As a Southerner who has lived in the North, I think it also helps to understand some social differences.

In my opinion, Southerners are much more friendly and easy going. However, at the same time, lots of friendships are skin deep. The same person who is friendly and hospitable will be talking about you behind your back.

With yankees, I've found that lots of them are cold on the outside at first, but once they're your friend, you have a true friend for life. Don't get thrown off if people don't seem as friendly at first in comparison to the South.
