Sophomore without summer plans

I'm an international sophomore at a top target and I have no clue what I'm going to do this summer. I have an average GPA (around 3.5) and almost all of my prior work experience has been research. I tried OCR but didn't expect anything. I made a list of banks for a bunch of cities on CapIQ and started cold-calling. A few places said to send in a resume to keep on record but that was pretty much the extent of it. At this point, I don't know if I can get OPT authorization in time for a summer internship, so I've focused my efforts on home.

My actual home, city-wise, is in the middle of nowhere. There are no alum and I've called virtually every place that might provide a relevant experience and they either haven't heard of my school and are completely unresponsive or hire coop students because they want to hire local talent. Even in the country (Canada, FWIW) the alum pool isn't very deep. I know any kind of BB job has been out of the question for a while, so I avoided calling people in those roles.

So I guess I just need some advice. I was thinking about staying on campus doing research and working in a hybrid research/administrative role at an on-campus institute. Is that a waste of a soph summer? Is there anything I can do at this point? I honestly don't want to do any more research but I feel like I'm out of options...
