Take Return Internship Offer or Not

Quick Info: Current Sophomore @ semi-target in TX. Majoring in RE. Previously interned at a small investment sales boutique that is approx. 10-12 senior brokers and 12-15 analysts in West Coast/SoCal area.

After I interned coming out of my Freshman Yr, I was given a return offer for the following summer. I asked for some time to make the decision and when I got a response, the CFO told me" ..... and I understand if you don't take this, I have told my students to do the same." (prior professor)

Anyhow, my only worry is that taking this offer will shelter me from other experiences but since investment sales is what I know I want to do- I worry that taking the job will yield me the same results from the past summer and I won't gain any more experience.

Assuming I go forward and take the return offer, does anyone have some insight on how I could put it across that I would like to dive in a bit deeper or work under one of the brokers/analysts? I want to ensure that if I take it, I'm not going back to do the same things I did the prior summer.

Lastly, I really enjoy the culture at this company, location is okay (very competitive), but I could see myself working with them for some time & if this would help my chances of getting hired in the future, then by all means I am in.

tl;dr Unsure whether to take return intern offer due to fear of stagnancy w/ small exposure to 'real shit'

Just let them know that you "would like to dive in a bit deeper or work under one of the brokers/analysts, and want to ensure that if you take it, you will not be doing the same things as the prior summer."

I'd literally just ask and see if you could do that. If not, ask them what else they could have you do that would help you get to where you want to be. The real world isn't quite as exciting as school where you learn a wide variety of things each year, it's 95% doing the same thing over and over again attempting to get better at it each time.

My problem here, is that I am in a program called ROTC, which commissions me into the Army as a 2nd LT, and one of the requirements of this is that the summer over my junior year (one of the most critical times for finance interns, or students altogether) I have to go to a camp for roughly 30 days and I still am not sure if I will be able to fit in an internship during that summer.
