Tech Finance vs Tech Sales Career Path to Take?
I just graduated with a degree in Finance and am considering two career paths where I have offers in or am in the final interview stages. I am unsure which direction to take for a long term career, I've done immense amounts of research and thought about pros/cons. Assuming I am successful in both roles, the two options are the Corporate Finance route with a technology company (think Intel, Qualcomm, AMD, IBM, etc) or the Tech Sales route (Think Oracle, Cisco, MongoDB, Databricks, etc). In finance my long term goal would be to move up the ladder into Director/VP of Finance. In sales I would ideally want to get into Enterprise AE and then maybe Sales Management after.
What are your thoughts and recommendations on which route to take? What careers path would be more lucrative long term?
Tech sales by a mile. Will maximize earning potential if you're extroverted.
You really think so? Once you move into Director levels and higher in Finance, the salaries are very high as well
Sales man. If you’re extroverted do Sales
It's not even close in terms of compensation, at all levels sales wins. However, it's a rare person that excels at both equally.
The real question is what type of person are you. Ask yourself:
-Can you eat what you kill?
-Can you talk to strangers?
-Can you get rejected and move forward?
-Can you handle uncertainty?
-Can you influence an outcome?
Don't mistake sales as easy. It's a different world altogether and gets rewarded as such.
Definitely helps if you have a technical background too. Know a tech sales exec worth probably $15-20 million. Worked solely with startups that 99% of people have never heard of.
Sales 100%. Many top Enterprise AEs are making $1m+ a year. Then when you move into first line management your base salary becomes $180K with an additional $180k+ in bonus based in team performance. Not to mention the RSUs/Equity you’d also be getting. Second line management, etc. you are making $500k+ easily.
Sales easily unless you’re super shy, and even if you are you should challenge yourself to overcome your fear. Rainmakers are always the ones that get paid.
