Tier 2 Undergrad --- Tier 2 Firm --- How to get into PE/VC?

I am about to graduate from an undergrad school that's top 50 but definitely not a target school. I have a job offer in TMT restructuring which I'll be starting this summer. The firm is respectable but definitely not on a BB level and I have serious doubts that given my undergrad and current firm that there will be any headhunters reaching out to me.

I am very interested in potentially moving into a Tech PE or VC role and I want to try to crack in. I have tried some cold e-mailing but am having very poor results and it seems understandable, why would an associate at a PE or VC shop want to speak with me? How can I crack my way into one of these shops? I have heard it's very bad form to reach out to headhunters, how true is this?

Really just looking for suggestions, advice, or any similar situations on how to start networking for these places and get on level with my peers at BB/similar shops.

Thanks
